Let me tell you why I think you should visit Oahu in the winter ::

#1 :: The rain may keep tourists away from Oahu in the winter…

Maybe. Maybe not. One of the reasons for the beautiful lush green landscape in Oahu in the winter particularly is the rain. But let me tell you :: unlike other destinations the rain won’t interfere with your plans, even in the winter [ho’oilo] which spans from November to about April. That is what is truly remarkable about Oahu. The rain will go away just as fast as it came. There is a saying in Hawaii that goes “if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes.” That is the truth.

Oahu in particular gets about 270 days of sun per year. That leaves about 95 days of overcast skies. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be cold and that also doesn’t mean all the overcast skies come during the winter. It just means that in the winter the sun may not be shining as intensely as in the summer “kau wela.” And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

#2 :: The untouched beauty of nature in Oahu surrounds you everywhere you go!

From the oceans to the mountains Oahu is filled with beautiful nature that will take your breath away. Pictures don’t even do Oahu in the winter justice. You’ll just have to go for yourself to truly understand.

#3 :: The food truck offerings in Oahu are off the chain!

Seriously. I’m not even kidding around about the food trucks. I mean, you probably are thinking I’m not for real right now but you have to try it for yourself when you come to Oahu. The amazing offerings on Oahu’s food trucks are bomb! And if you come in the winter you may not have to struggle with the long lines of tourists.

Oh and you can’t forget the drinks that are so popular. Have you ever had a Mai Tai in Oahu? If you haven’t you need to go and try it because you won’t taste a better one anywhere in the world! Of course there are several others you might like such as Blue Hawaiian, Lava Flow or a Pina Colada. They also make them “virgin” style like I like them. But the drinks in Oahu are not to be missed.

#4 :: You are always “ohana” in Oahu!

“Ohana” means family. Everywhere you go in Oahu you are family. You will be met with smiling faces and friendly people everywhere you go. I mean, what’s not to be happy about living on such a beautiful island especially in the winter when everyone else is shivering? There will be no doubt that you will feel right at home!

 #5 :: Sunsets in Oahu are among the most magnificent in the world!

Incomparable. That’s how I describe the sunsets in Oahu. And in wintertime they are no less beautiful than any other time of year. Breathtakingly beautiful sunsets paint the sky every night. Just amazing.

#6 :: Oahu offers something for everyone!

Where else in the world can you be shopping to your heart’s content in the bustling city in the winter and then 30 minutes later be laying under the island sun on a sandy beach? There are several places I can think of maybe in spring or summer or fall… but winter? Oahu in winter is amazing and somewhere everyone in your family or group can have their way.

#7 :: Romance is not just reserved for summers in Oahu!

Looking for a wedding destination? Oahu in the winter is just as beautiful as ever. You’ll have your choice of amazing resorts in Oahu in the winter when at home the weather is cold and damp.

#8 :: The views in Oahu are just as stunning in the winter!

Picture this :: you open your eyes after a restful night’s sleep and look out your window to see the most magnificent sunrise in the backdrop to a beautiful scene of lush green and crystal blue waters crashing against the rocks. You step out onto your garden and feel the cool morning breeze in your hair as you listen to the waves of the ocean. You look to your left and take in the breathtaking views of the lush hillsides protruding from the vast fields of green. Where are you? You’re in Oahu in the winter! Isn’t it amazing?

We stayed at the Turtle Bay Resort and I highly recommend it. Our condo was located at the expansive resort and the rest of our family stayed in condos throughout as well as the main resort on the beach. It was the perfect location for a family reunion, wedding or for any reason really.

#9 :: Shave ice in Oahu tastes just as good in the winter as it does in summer!

Hawaii is known for its shave ice and I’ve tried to create it at home but for some reason it never comes out as amazing as the shave ice in Oahu. You seriously need to try the shave ice and it’s just as yummy in winter!

#10 :: Every day is casual day in Oahu!

Winter is considered high season in Oahu and when you’re there you will realize why :: the weather is unlike anywhere else in the world during this time of year! And that means there is no need to dress up :: t-shirts, shorts, tank tops, skirts and flip flops are the attire of the day and night. It’s called “Hawaiian Casual.”

Oahu is definitely a destination for you if you are looking to have a great time living the island life in winter. No need for coats or galoshes, you’re coming into the Sun! Bring your flip flops and sunscreen and you’ll be good to go! Enjoy your time in Oahu next winter and you will thank me for the suggestion.

What a blessing to have been able to capture this image of Nubble Lighthouse. I had to wait until the sun was in the right place in order to see it but it was well worth the wait to get the perfect reflection.

Maine’s rocky coast was the original inspiration for this lighthouse for which President Rutherford B. Hayes approved the $15,000 appropriation for it in 1874. In 1987 it became automated after which the city of York became the official and permanent guardian for Nubble Light.

There are several memorials and benches dedicated to and by private citizens on which to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery here. I don’t believe they are accepting new applications but I found it to be a wonderful way to commemorate loved ones on this beautifully serene place.

I’m thankful to my friend Jenn for bringing me here and giving me the blessing of finding this amazing spot on the Maine coast, a place I’d never been until now, but certainly one I will try to visit again in the future. Peaceful in the morning before the crowds came it was the perfect time to reflect on God’s goodness and grace.

Rather than going through and listing my favorite things about New England [because seriously I loved it all!] I’ll just start with the food. I mean, what better place to start, right?

Red Arrow Diner in Manchester, New Hampshire

I’m told that the Red Arrow Diner in Manchester has been visited by presidential candidates, Hollywood actors and famous musicians from all over the States. I personally sat at the same seat Diane Sawyer once sat at.

Famous for their home-cooked meals and pies, I enjoyed a wonderful breakfast and finished it off with a piece of their peanut butter and chocolate cream pie. Too rich to finish but it was just something I had to do. I mean, SOMEone had to do it! And it certainly didn’t disappoint!

Kisaki Japanese Cuisine :: All-You-Can-Eat Sushi in Manchester, New Hampshire

Sushi is one of my all-time favorite foods to eat and I have to say I have had some great sushi all over the world. But when someone suggests an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant I usually decline. Call me a sushi snob. “All-you-can-eat” usually indicates to me that the quality is not as good as what you get in a truly authentic sushi bar.

Well, I stand corrected for all time. Kisaki Japanese Cuisine in Manchester was absolutely fabulous. For $24.99 per person [dinner price] it is IMHO a steal for what you get :: amazing sushi! Try the tuna tartar for an appetizer [to die for] and any of the rolls on the menu. Order a round, enjoy and when you’re ready they will take your next order and serve it to you on a nice large platter in the center of the table. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten so much sushi in one sitting and walked away wishing I could have eaten more.

KC’s Rib Shack in Manchester, New Hampshire

KC’s Rib Shack is known for their hickory-smoked BBQ :: in large quantities at that! Tables are covered in butcher paper and include a roll of paper towels. Trust me :: you will need them! Your chicken, pork ribs, beef ribs, pulled pork, sausage and brisket are all smoked to perfection and then served at your table with all the trimmings along with a six-pack of sauces.

The Feedbag Shovel is their signature dish :: be sure to invite all your friends to join in when you order it though because there is no way to finish this dish by yourself! It contains six pounds [you read that right] six pounds of barbecued goodness and includes a variety of each of their specialties.

Martha’s Exchange in Nashua, New Hampshire

One of the places I experienced while in New Hampshire was Martha’s Exchange, a charming New England restaurant and brewhouse. Their lobster mac and cheese and their clam chowder were to die for. And the atmosphere was truly wonderful.

Congdon’s Doughnuts in Wells, Maine

Located in the beautiful seaside town of Wells, Congdon’s Family Restaurant & Bakery has been serving up world famous doughnuts and delicious breakfast items since 1955. The recipes and flavors are the same as they were when they opened their doors almost seven decades ago and the reason Food and Wine Magazine voted them in the top 15 of their list of America’s Best Doughnuts.

Docks Seafood in Portland, Maine

My friend Jen brought me here to try their fresh lobster and then taught me for my very first time how to crack and eat it. And I must say it is the best lobster I’ve ever eaten. So far, that is, because I plan to come back for more in the future! It’s true what they say about New England Maine lobster :: it is the best! From what I’ve come to understand Maine lobster lives in cold water but warmer than that of Canadian lobster and because of that they are tastier. OMG it was soooo gooood!

Blink’s Fry Doe in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire

Blink’s Fry Doe that serves a traditional funnel-like dessert has two locations at the 14-mile and only stretch of coast you will find in New Hampshire which tells how popular it is. I had the cinnamon sugar with powdered sugar but Jen and I shared it, thank goodness.

Brown’s Lobster Pound in Seabrook, New Hampshire

Four generations of Browns have owned and worked this New England lobster pound turned successful restaurant. Known for their fresh lobster and steamed clams you will find much more such as lobster rolls and sandwiches here… fresh as can be! And feel free to BYOB and any other food you want as long as it’s not something they serve. What a fun, casual atmosphere of picnic tables with a great view of the coastline, inside or outside, it’s your choice.

Getting your appetite up to visit New England was a great idea, wasn’t it? I mean now you really have a reason to get up there! And even though that should be motivation enough there is so much more to the Northeast that will just blow you away. I was truly blown away! First up, what I found really special were the lighthouses.

Nubble Light in Cape Neddick, York, Maine

My friend Jen and I had the foresight to head out early in the day before all the tourists could clog up the view. When we arrived at Nubble Lighthouse, also known as Cape Neddick Light Station, there were only two people out there and we were able to enjoy the stunning views on a gorgeous spring day in Maine pretty much all by ourselves.

I took so many pictures of this amazing New England spot that I’ll have to create a separate post for them all.

Portland Head Light / Fort Williams Park in Portland, Maine

What a beautiful setting for this lighthouse and park and I’m thankful I had such a beautiful day to enjoy it. Stay tuned to that in my next post.

Its original function in 1776 was to alert the townspeople of coming attacks from the Brits and was managed by a crew of lighthouse keepers. Over the years Portland Head Light has become automated. These days the Coast Guard maintains the light and fog signals but the remainder of the property is maintained by the Town of Cape Elizabeth.

Bug Light in Portland, Maine

Bug Light was dubbed for its small size. Makes sense, right? It is such an adorable lighthouse. Its official name, Portland Breakwater Lighthouse, was built in 1875 and is one of Maine’s most elegant lighthouses. Though modeled on an ancient Greek monument, it was built with plates of cast iron. 

Bug Light Park is a popular destination for picnicking, boating, kite flying and salt water fishing. The 8.78 acre park was the site of major shipbuilding activity during WWII. An estimated 30,000 people were employed here from 1941-1945 building liberty ships for the New England Shipbuilding Corp. and the South Portland Shipbuilding Corp. 

Spring Point Ledge Light in Portland, Maine

Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse is one of the few working lighthouse that is available for visitors to tour and the only caisson-style lighthouse visitors can walk to. The beautiful granite boulders that form a path to Spring Point Ledge Light are stunning.

The United States Coast Guard continues to maintain the aids to navigation, the light and fog signal, having transferred ownership of the lighthouse structure to the Spring Point Ledge Light Trust in 1998.  The Trust is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) public charity committed to the preservation of the lighthouse, which was listed on the National Historic Register in 1988. 

There were several other really special places my friend Jen took me to.

The Wiggly Bridge in York, Maine

What may very well be the world’s smallest suspension bridge the Wiggly Bridge spans a mere 75 feet between two green towers. One right side in this image is the York River and on the left is Barrell Mill Pond.

Barrell Mill Pond Dam in York, Maine

This tidal pond created by a dam in 1726 and formerly known as Meeting House Creek was the focal point of much of York’s history for the first 300 years. The first English house built in York in 1630 by Edwin Godfrey was built on the south-west shore of Meeting House Creek. It’s amazing to me that so much history lies in this nondescript place.

Bald Eagle and its nest

I ran into a local man who pointed out the location of a bald eagle on a branch across the pond. Had I had a camera with a good zoom lens it would have been a lot more clear however all I had with me was my iPhone X and this is all I was able to document. If you look very closely you can see him.

He then explained that there was a nest around the other side of the pond if I would cross the bridge and look up into the trees. I was able to cross the bridge but had no idea where to look for this nest. Lucky for me I came upon a photographer who was commissioned by two ladies to show them the nest and he was kind enough to point it out to me.

I promised this photographer that I would mention his name and his Facebook link on which he has spent his lifetime documenting the bald eagles in this area. Please take a look at the Corey Cain Photography page where you will find some pretty amazing images he has taken over the years.

Lobster boat

What a blessing it was to come across a lobster boat and its crew that was loading the cages to be set out.

Bush Compound in Kennebunkport, Maine

What a beautiful place, Kennebunkport, the location of the Bush Family Compound here in New England. It looked as though there were a couple of Secret Service cars on the property as well as people who it appeared were unloading. There were a couple of kids running around so I’m thinking at least some of the family was present when I took this picture.

St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunk, Maine

What I found exceptional was the little church that is said to be where the Bushes attend when they are summering in Kennebunkport. It is open for services only seasonally starting in June but the doors are always open. I’m thankful to have been able to visit and enjoy its beauty inside and out.

I was so impressed by this church :: I will be dedicating a post to include more images of this beautiful place. Stay tuned.

The Stonehouse in Kennebunk, Maine

What a stunning place! I couldn’t go further without stopping to see it. Water views from every window :: available for rent at $17k per week. Honey :: can we go?

The Wedding Cake House in Kennebunk, Maine

The most photographed house in Maine for its frilly Gothic-inspired architecture, the Wedding Cake house was constructed by George W. Bourne, a prominent 19th-century shipbuilder who constructed his vessels on the Kennebunk River directly behind the home.

Anheuser-Busch Brewery and home of the Clydesdales in Merrimack, New Hampshire

The Anheuser-Busch Brewery is located in stunning surroundings in Merrimack, New Hampshire and offers a Biergarten as well as tours of the facility.

On the property you will also find the home of the Budweiser Clydesdales East Coast Team. When the hitch is back from one of their many public appearances you can get an up-close and personal encounter and have your picture taken with these iconic horses right here.

Lowell, Massachusetts :: “The Cradle of the Industrial Revolution”

Incorporated in 1826 to serve as a mill town Lowell was named after Francis Cabot Lowell a local figure in the Industrial Revolution. The city became known as the “Cradle of the American Industrial Revolution” due to a large series of textile mills and factories.

Nearly 200 years ago Lowell’s groundbreaking canal system transformed the landscape and powered the city’s new textile mills. Of the nearly six miles of canals dug to provide waterpower almost all remain intact and functional. The survival of this historic power system was one of the key factors in the successful creation of Lowell National Historical Park in 1978. Today this network of waterways has reemerged as a defining feature of contemporary life in downtown Lowell.

Heisler Park :: Images That Will Inspire You to Visit

I am so thankful for my time in New England. It is a place that I hope to return again and again. Many thanks to my friend Jen for showing me her favorite places in and around her home. It is an adventure I’ll never forget.

The Park

This is a beautiful memento dedicated to the 9/11 victims, survivors and first responders. What a beautiful place to display it.

Picnic tables in Heisler Park make it a wonderful place to bring the family.

There are benches throughout Laguna Beach dedicated to and by people who live there.

Artist installation of “Breaching Whale” displayed beautifully in Heisler Park.

The Laguna Beach Garden Club, Laguna Beach Beautification Council and the City of Laguna have collaborated by planting around the magnificent Melaleuca Tree. The over 50-year-old tree is in danger of being no more because people are tempted to use it as a bench.

Beautiful plants and trees extend to the ocean viewpoint…

The Views

Bird Rock is named for the obvious :: it’s a great perch for the birds. The City of Laguna Beach takes great care to make sure that they are left alone. What an amazing view, don’t you think? The other images I’ve posted of the views here don’t need further explanation :: they are among my most favorite views ever…

The Memorials

Semper Memento “Always Remember” dedicated to the 9/11 tragedy.

Two original beams from the Twin Towers were used to create this 9/11 memorial called Semper Memento display by the artist Jorg Dubin who lives in Laguna Beach.

A Veterans Monument was presented by the American Legion Post 222 including two plaques that commemorate those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms as well as those who served in the Armed Forces during times of war and placed in Heisler Park.

The Veterans Monument also contains a Time Capsule that was sealed up in 1977 and is scheduled to be opened on May 30, 2027

It wouldn’t be complete to have a war memorial without the American Flag. I’m assuming the flag was set at half-mast the day I took this picture in honor of Princess Diana of Wales who died on August 31, 1997.

The Public Art

“Breaching Whale” sculpture so beautifully displayed. Artist is Jon Seeman, winner of the Art in Public Places contest held by the Arts Commission in Laguna Beach.

“Time Connected” shows interlocking wheels filled in with ceramic tiles showing images of local plants and insects. Artists Scott & Naomi Schoenherr.

Catching the Sun :: her name is “Sea Breeze” and she stands on the bluff overlooking Laguna Beach. Her hair turns to waves when she emerges from the sea.

“Sea Breeze” artist Sukhdev Dail used beautiful colored glass in the canopy she is holding above her head.

“The Tidal Pull” is centered on stainless steel fish textured and patinaed to show scales, fins and eyes and the fish appear to swim in circular motion. Artists Scott & Naomi Schoenherr.

Drinking fountain decorated with beautiful tiles created by the same artists of “Time Connected” and “The Tidal Pull” :: Scott & Naomi Schoenherr.

One of the many concrete benches throughout Laguna Beach. Being such an artistic city you won’t find many that are not considered some type of public art. This one is a bus bench on the street right outside Heisler Park.

“Continuous Rotation” :: the award winning multi-media art studio of Scott & Naomi Schoenherr were chosen to create the sculpture garden here, this being their third piece of public art in this space.

There are many, many public art installations throughout Laguna Beach. I may just have to write a separate post to feature the amazing artwork and the artists who created them within my favorite California beach city…

After having seeing these amazing images I am certain that you will want to come for a visit soon. You can really lose yourself in the beauty of God’s creation, man’s beautiful artwork and the peaceful serenity here. And andlthough the beauty of these breath-taking beaches are more than enough to draw visitors from around the world it is also a city filled with all kinds of nightlife and fun things to do. I may have to write another post about that! Best of both worlds!

10 Secret Places in San Francisco and Where to Find Them

OK you might be saying to yourself “That’s great and all but what about the cost of living? Isn’t it expensive to live in California?” I mean, it isn’t the cheapest place to live for sure. But you get what you pay for, right? I live near the beach, the desert, the mountains, the river and downtown Los Angeles. I can just jump in my car and all it costs me to get there is some gas. The weather is a balmy 70-75* nearly all year long. I have sunshine in my backyard 90% of the year.

At a moment’s notice I can decide to go to the beach, to any one of a plethora of concert venues or amusement parks or broadway-quality theaters, dine at the best diners and restaurants and I can be to any of those places within 30 minutes without a worry in the world that the weather will be a deterrent.

C’mon, wouldn’t you agree that those are some pretty compelling reasons for living where I do? So we sacrifice on having material things :: I’m not a material girl anyway. My big love in life [besides my family of course] is travel. And when I can get any number of amazing places at a moment’s notice, that’s worth the price of living here.

And of all the amazing things I have at my fingertips on a daily basis there is one place that has completely stolen my heart ::

Best Ocean Views in Laguna Beach

Seriously, aren’t these deep blue waves crashing on the rocks here in Laguna Beach calling your name? You can hear it, can’t you? They’re saying “Come to me!” If you haven’t been here yet I can’t urge you enough to come for a visit because Laguna Beach is absolutely FABulous. A 30-45 minute drive will bring me from the comforts of my home to this beautiful place where I can feel as though I’m on a vacation far, far away.

When it comes to views, Laguna Beach has some of the best So Cal has to offer.

#6 :: Best ocean views from our hotel

Waking up in the morning to this kind of view is pretty spectacular, don’t you think? Laguna Beach has the perfect vacation view. We love staying at Laguna Beach hotels :: this one happens to be the Laguna Beach Inn which has an adorable atmosphere, a lovely pool overlooking the ocean and it’s close to the beach and all of my favorite little shops and restaurants. Oh, and it is walking distance to Starbucks [sorry, not sorry].

#5 :: Best ocean views from the boardwalk

Walking along the beach is something that Roydio and I enjoy immensely. The view is pretty stunning and we can walk along with this view for hours.

 #4 :: Best ocean views from Victoria Beach

Victoria Beach is hidden from view and unless you know exactly where to go to find it you will not. Around the corner to the right is one of the most interestingly placed towers I’ve ever seen with a great story to go with it :: you really need to walk out there to see it because it is like none you’ve ever seen. I’ll leave out that image so you are compelled to go!

Calm serene, Crescent Bay Point Park is the perfect place to relax and reflect while enjoying the beautiful views of Laguna Beach.

#2 :: Best ocean views from Brown’s Park

Brown’s Park is hidden in plain sight, tucked between the Village Shops and the Wyland Gallery. Once you find it you will be so happy you did! A unique park with a beautiful outlook over Laguna Beach beyond two beautiful stained glass fence rails. The park itself is really adorable :: well worth finding.

I’ve been coming to Laguna Beach for over 30 years and after all that time there is one place that I just recently found that I am really thrilled to share with you and it’s become my #1 pick to visit for its views :: Heisler Park. I love it so much that I’ve dedicated a separate post about it. Look for it on Thursday!

Laguna Beach has some of the best ocean views in California. This town is full of life and beauty :: it really has it all. So when I need to get away for a few hours or for the day or for a weekend this is my staycation destination of choice. I feel so blessed to live nearby this beautiful ocean city.

I will be writing more about the places I’ve mentioned above in upcoming posts but for now I’d like to draw your attention to a little-known place in the seemingly nondescript college town, home of one of the campuses of ASU [Arizona State University] ::

Papago Park :: cacti

Filled to the rim with beautiful desert plants this unexpected find lies in the city of Tempe. I hadn’t realized this amazing place was so near the city :: as a matter of fact I ran into it by accident even though I had intended to visit. But as I was driving out to the Scottsdale Fashion Square I kept seeing these amazing cacti to my left + right, along College Avenue.

Bunny ears + Old Man or Whisker cacti can be found throughout. Desert plants are so awesome, aren’t they? There’s nothing like them.

Saguaro, Engelmann Prickly Pear, Weber’s Agave, Barrel cacti… so gorgeous + so many different kinds of cacti for miles around.

Canal Lake

Canal Lake is so pretty :: there were a couple of people fishing here + there are usually ducks swimming around but it was a bit warm + it looked like they were getting some shade on the sidelines today. But the water was so calm that the reflection of the trees were crystal clear.

Hole-in-the-Rock

Hole-in-the-Rock is a natural geological formation composed of red sandstone. An easy 5-10 minute hike will get you up to one of the most sought-after views of the Phoenix area.

Throughout Arizona you will find rock formations that rival any other in the country.

Red rocks are actually sandstone. The darker the formations the more manganese oxide they contain.

More desert plants

Riddled with desert plants Papago Park is home to many such cacti + succulents as Weber’s Agave, Soaptree Yucca, Engelmann Prickly Pear + Saguaro.

Saguaro cacti are very slow growing. A 10 year old plant might only be 1.5 inches tall. Saguaro can grow to be between 40-60 feet tall + can live up to 150-200 years. When rain is plentiful + the Saguaro is fully hydrated it can weigh between 3200-4800 pounds.

Shown below are Weber’s Agave, Barrel, Organ Pipe, Saguaro + Soaptree Yucca. The Desert Botanical Garden is a great place to wander to see all of the wonderful desert plants + flowers. The best time to visit is in the spring when all the desert + cactus flowers are in bloom.

Stunning Saguaro :: I wonder how old this one is … can you take a guess?

Quiet, calm + serene Canal Lake is a perfect respite after a long hike.

The prickly pear is soft + smooth other than the thorns. And the Weber’s Agave makes great medicine for an open sore as does aloe.

The gilded flicker + Gila woodpecker excavate nest cavities inside the Saguaros’ pulpy flesh. When a woodpecker abandons a cavity elf owls, screech owls, purple martins, finches + sparrows may move in. It looks like some of the bigger creatures have made their home in this one.

Located in the outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona this beautiful desert is drivable + easily accessible from California, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Nevada + other parts of Arizona itself. On the way you will enjoy some spectacular scenery :: take the time to stop along the way, savor the calm of nature all around you + linger in its beauty.

If you are able to come in the springtime you can also enjoy the cacti in full desert flower bloom.

Make Papago Park your destination + you will find much more than just a park. You will fall in love with nature all over again.

On this trip I actually took my granddaughter with me. It was great fun to have some girl time with her and show her TEN of my very favorite places in Boston!!

#10 :: Old State House and Custom House Tower

I am fascinated by architecture and history so I thought I’d just start with these two great pieces of Bostonian history. Turns out Samy loves it too!

Old State House

The Old State House is a historic building at the intersection of Washington and State Streets. Built in 1713 it was the seat of the Massachusetts General Court until 1798 and is one of the oldest public buildings in the United States. One of the landmarks on Boston’s Freedom Trail it is the oldest surviving public building in Boston and now serves as a history museum operated by the Bostonian Society. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and a Boston Landmark by the Boston Landmarks Commission in 1994.

Isn’t it beautiful? I love all the detail in the cornices and the arches over the windows [on the roof] and doors.

Custom House Tower

More than 100 years after its completion, the original skyscraper still stands tall in the Financial District, an unprecedented 495 feet, solidifying its status as Boston’s first skyscraper and tallest building :: a title it maintained until the completion of the Prudential Tower in 1964.

We couldn’t have had a more beautiful day to see this iconic tower!

Over the years, the Custom House was home to numerous government agencies from customs to the Fish and Wildlife Service. It was vacated in 1986 and was bought by the city a year later but it remained unused until it was reopened as a Marriott timeshare hotel in 1997.

#9 :: Newbury Street and the Back Bay

I’m not really a shopper. I mean, I don’t necessarily find great joy in spending money on myself. [I know I’m probably not the “typical” woman. I’d rather spend my money on traveling the world!] And although Newbury Street is known for its shopping it is also beautiful and the surrounding area of the Back Bay is what I appreciate so much.

One of the two most expensive residential areas, Back Bay was named after and started as a bay which was filled in during the 19th century. The area has since been known for its elite Victorian brownstones, the Boston Public Library and upscale hotels, offices and shopping.

Samy and I visited JP Licks which is an absolutely must-do in Boston. What’s great is that it is opening back up on Newbury Street in the Back Bay after several years of being away. So when you go make sure you visit the magic ice cream [and cakes and pies and coffee and much more] kingdom of JP Licks.

#8 :: King’s Chapel and Burying Ground

King’s Chapel and Burying Ground was founded in 1630 as the first graveyard in the city of Boston. It was Boston Proper’s first and only burial site for 30 years (1630–1660).

In 1686 the local Anglican congregation was allotted land in the graveyard to build King’s Chapel. I just love the contrast of color between the off-white walls and columns and the burgundy upholstery. And check out the pews below :: it looks like they are private boxes like at the theater. Stunning!

King’s Chapel Burying Ground boasts a multitude of illustrious residents including John Winthrop, Massachusetts’ first Governor and Mary Chilton, the first woman to step off the Mayflower.

Joseph Tapping’s stone in the front of the burying ground where a skeleton and Father Time battle over the eventuality of death may be Boston’s most beautiful headstone.

#7 :: Cheers bar

Founded in 1969 as the Bull & Finch Pub, Cheers Beacon Hill became the original inspiration for the setting of the TV show Cheers. When the producers went looking for a location to depict the ideal American bar they headed to Boston, famous for colorful pubs, sports teams and lively politics. This really is the place where everybody knows your name. Just step inside and see why.

 #6 :: State House on Beacon Hill

The building of the Massachusetts State House in 1795 was the beginning of the physical and social transformation of Beacon Hill. Oh that beautiful golden dome! That year several wealthy Bostonians including Charles Bulfinch [the famous architect who designed the State House] formed an association to develop the area. The parcel of land now called Beacon Hill was originally known as Tri-mount or Tremont because of three peaks that graced its skyline. A beacon on one of the hills was erected to warn neighboring communities of enemy danger. A monument behind the State House marks the original location of the beacon which then was approximately 60 feet higher than its current elevation.

In the fifty years after the building of the State House, the three peaks were shorn off one after another so that residential housing could be built on flatter land and to create land where there was once water. Three distinct regions now known as the South Slope, the North Slope and the Flat of the Hill resulted from the development of the remaining area, the entirety of which is now called Beacon Hill.

The State House is one of twenty stops along the acclaimed Freedom Trail.

#5 :: New England Holocaust Memorial

I was astonished upon seeing the six 54’ tall glass towers each etched with numbers :: 6 million representing the Holocaust victims. The towers themselves represent the six major death camps. There is also a granite path covered in quotes from survivors that leads visitors inside the towers. 

A free exhibition just south of Faneuil Hall. Do yourself a service and go visit the Holocaust Memorial. It will take your breath away.

#4 :: Faneuil Hall Marketplace

Faneuil Hall nicknamed “The Hub of the Hub” Marketplace is actually four great places in one location :: Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, North Market and South Market :: all set around a cobblestone promenade where jugglers, magicians and musicians entertain the passers-by. Stroll, shop, eat, laugh, wander and explore it all.

Samy and I just happened to be there when the World Cup Soccer games were going on so we ducked into a soccer store to watch the game at their viewing party! Great timing!

#3 :: Museum of Science

The MoS is Boston’s most popular cultural destination and it was one of our very favorite places to visit. Since she will be going to Pre-Med and then Medical School to become a doctor she was especially fascinated [as was I] with all of the amazing hands-on stations.

One of our fave special presentations was the Electricity Theater. I highly recommend spending some time at the Museum of Science.

#2 :: Boston Common and Public Garden

This beautiful English-style park [the oldest in America] once belonged to the Reverend William Blackstone, a reclusive clergyman who was the first person to settle in Boston and sole owner of Beacon Hill at that time. The name Boston Common comes from the land’s original use as common pasture for horses and cattle. From the time of its settlement in 1630 until after the Revolutionary War Beacon Hill had only a few country estates surrounded by pastures and orchards.

Taking a Swan Boat on the lake in the Public Garden is a must. This is a wonderfully relaxing way to just enjoy being on the water and enjoying the lush green surrounding it.

Right between the Boston Common Visitors Center and Tremont Street are three bronze and granite sculptures depicting Learning, Religion and Industry to depict three traits of Boston life. The statues create a semi circle around the Parkman Plaza. On the south side of the plaza, a statue of a young boy on his knees, hands lifted to heaven depict Boston’s religious roots. The west side has a statue of a man drilling for industry. The north side is labeled learning shows a young boy sitting on top of a globe, reading a book.

They were sculpted by Arcangelo Cascieri and Adio Biccari on the direction of the Boston Art Commission and erected in 1961 to honor philanthropist George Francis Parkman Jr. Dr. who donated $5 million for the preservation of Boston Common and other city parks.

#1 :: Freedom Trail

The Freedom Trail is approximately 2.5 miles long and takes approximately 2 hours to walk straight through. Just follow the red brick path starting at Boston Common and ending at the U.S.S. Constitution and Bunker Hill Monument. But you will definitely want to stop at some or all of the sites so plan on it taking most of your day. It is well worth taking this walking tour and although it is also available on the Duck Tour or Hop On Hop Off bus you will see so many more details when you walk. Samy and I had beautiful weather so it was fabulous!

Just another little something that we happened to catch on the streets near Faneuil Hall as we were strolling by…funnnn!

It’s always a good time in Boston. My thirst for history is truly quenched in Bean Town. One of the oldest cities in America incorporates all the sights and sounds and smells that I love and I can’t wait to get back here. To avoid most of the tourists the end of summer to about the beginning of October is a great time to visit and when the fall weather is usually pretty mild.

Oh, and one last thing :: “Pahk ya cah in the backyahd” :: ya gotta love that Bostonian accent!

San Francisco is known for so many great + wonderful sites that you probably have heard about if you’ve not been to including the Golden Gate Bridge, Ghirardelli Square, Fishermans Wharf, Pier 39, Alcatraz, Lombard Street, Coit Tower, cable cars… but there are some really unique places that not everyone knows about that are too special not to visit.

If you’ve been to San Francisco many times like I have it is a delightful surprise to find these hidden gems + worth it to make another trip out just to find them.

#10 :: The Green Apple

Green Apple has grown to ten times its original size, now the biggest single-location independent bookseller in SF with new + used books for sale. They also ship for 99 cents. What a wonderful shop to roam around in. Unique + so quaint.

#9 :: Camera Obscura

Camera Obscura is a rare device based on a 15th century design by Leonardo da Vinci. It produces 360 degrees of spectacular Live Images of the Seal Rock Area. Beautiful views!

#8 :: Seward Street Slides

Designed in the 1970s by a young teenage girl who won the “Design the Park” contest Seward Street Slides is still being enjoyed decades later + located high above the Castro District. The twin chutes are technically supposed to be for kids but many adults enjoy it (I did!). Bring some cardboard to sit on + if you want to go really fast throw some sand down the slide first.

#7 :: Bi-Rite Creamery

Started by two bakers who wanted to bring delicious treats in a responsible, sustainable way, Bi-Rite Creamery develops intensely flavored ice cream recipes that feature locally-sourced ingredients often highlighting seasonal fruit.

The bakeshop serves cupcakes, cookies, galettes, sweetbreads + granola year-round. The menu changes reflecting the seasons. Probably one of the best-tasting + quality ice creams I’ve ever had. Can’t wait to come back for more!

 #6 :: Baker Beach

Baker Beach is popular with the locals + located on the other side of Golden Gate Bridge. Be aware as you explore the north end because it is a clothing-optional area. Unsafe for swimming however because of the frequent rip currents in the surf it’s still a wonderful find so near the city.

#5 :: Painted Ladies

These famous Victorian homes of the Queen Anne era feature multiple balconies, large porches + are usually 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 stories tall. Be sure to schedule time to take a tour inside one of the Painted Ladies if you can. The park across the street makes a delightful place to relax + gives a great vantage point to take some wonderful pictures of the Painted Ladies.

#4 :: Mission District Murals

Throughout the Mission District neighborhood you will find hundreds of fences + walls adorned with particularly Mexican-inspired murals. Balmy Alley is a highlight located between 17th + 18th Streets + Mission + Valencia Streets. Its collection of murals reflect a variety of art styles + often depict themes of social inclusiveness. #3 :: Hidden Garden Steps

This Hidden Garden Steps project is a volunteer-driven, community-based effort to create a second set of ceramic-tiled steps (after the 16th Avenue Mosaic Steps located at Moraga) + public gardens in San Francisco’s Inner Sunset district while strengthening the existing sense of community that exists here. Beautiful work :: these tiles are a must see.

#2 :: Wave Organ

Sitting atop a jet in the marina is a musical instrument called the Wave Organ that is played by the San Francisco Bay itself. The jetty was constructed with marble + carved granite from a demolished cemetery. As the tide changes the sounds it makes do too. When the water rolls in it burbles but on its way out the sound is more like that of a belching man. The best time to hear it is at high tide so be sure to check the tide tables before heading out to the marina to the Wave Organ.

#1 :: Sutro Baths Ruins

In 1894 self-made millionaire Adolph Sutro designed what was then the world’s largest indoor swimming pool + is today known as the Sutro Baths Ruins. The historic baths were part of a lavish swimming facility with six saltwater tanks + over 500 private dressing rooms, restaurants + arcades that were enclosed by 100,000 square feet of glass. After Sutro died + during the Great Depression it was closed down.

The remaining structure still exists as magnificent architectural ruins at the north end of Ocean Beach near the famous Cliff House restaurant. Walk around the fascinating ruins + learn more about the history of the legendary family swimming + entertainment center.

I walked all over the area + then spent some time overlooking the water where you will find some magnificent views. Artists also spend time there on the rocks painting + drawing :: pretty cool.

If you’ve never been to San Francisco you will enjoy seeing all the tourist spots because there are many. But whether or not you’ve been I highly recommend spending time in search of these secret places in San Francisco. They will delight you to no end. I am looking forward to my next visit where I hope to find many more “hidden” gems + I’ll be sure to share them with you!

Part 6: DRIVING Outside the City Limits

Roydio + I have been coming to Las Vegas for many years. It is only a 4-hour drive from our home in California so it’s a great spot for a quick getaway. And because there are so many things to do in town it took us several years to venture out + boy were we pleasantly surprised to find this gem. Not far outside of Las Vegas in the Mojave Desert, maybe a 30-minute drive, you will find an absolute treasure.

a. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

Red Rock is absolutely stunning. It is said to have taken millions of years to create these colorful rock formations + you will be amazed by this natural beauty. You can drive through the canyon, hike the trails, visit the museum. We spent several hours roaming about in this beautiful place.

Red Rock is available to you for the bargain price of $15 per car. Seniors 62+ get a discount + you can get an annual pass as well.

b. Hoover Dam

About a 20-minute drive outside of Las Vegas on the border of Nevada + Arizona you will come upon the 80-year-old Hoover Dam + one of the Top Ten Construction Achievements of the 20th Century. Wow! You have got to see this – what an impressive site!

It is free to see + accessible from 5am to 9pm if you just want to drive through. Parking will cost $10 or it’s free if you are handicapped but you can’t stop your car when you are directly on top of the dam to take pictures. To take the full tour it’s $15 per person ($12 for seniors 62+) between 9am + 5pm. 

It’s also a tradition to take a picture on the Nevada/Arizona border. 

c. Laughlin, Nevada

The Colorado River between Laughlin, Nevada + Bullhead City, Arizona is the place to be in the summer.

About 90 minutes outside of Las Vegas + also on the Nevada-Arizona border you will find this exciting Colorado River town of Laughlin. In the summer the river is packed with speed boats, jet skis, parasailers + everything else that floats in the water. They even hold their Annual Regatta here which is what is pictured above. Temperatures rise well up into the 100’s (sometimes even over 120) so the water is the perfect place to hang out.

Don Laughlin’s Classic Car Museum

At the Riverside Resort in Laughlin you will find a museum featuring old cars dating back to the 1920’s. Don Laughlin’s Classic Car Museum is a free exhibit (but they do take donations) so take your time admiring all of these old relics. It’s nostalgic to say the least. I’m not necessarily into cars but I had to admit these were pretty cool to see.

New Year’s Eve

I know Las Vegas is known for having over-the-top New Year’s Eve celebrations. But Laughlin holds its own. It’s more of a sleepy town version of Las Vegas during NYE but let me tell you their fireworks display is awesome + since they shoot the fireworks over the river you have full view of this incredible show from any vantage point. We like hanging out on the river outside the Golden Nugget.

If you’re like me + prefer a more laid-back celebration into the new year, try Laughlin.

d. Ghost Town in Nelson, Nevada

A little town near Lake Mojave, Nelson is a historical landmark within the Eldorado Canyon area where some famous music videos + movies were filmed. I found this little town a couple of years ago when searching out locations to have a photo shoot for my business Laga Handbags. No, there are actually no ghosts that live in this cute little town. Not even sure why they call them ghost towns – maybe because no people live there?

Nelson is a photographer’s dream location. Here you will find old buildings, amazing rusted-out + antique cars, breathtaking scenery with winding old roads, gas station signs + even old mining equipment used back when the local Techatticup gold mine was in full swing. It’s a great place to visit, approximately 42 miles outside of Vegas + you’ll drive through the Sloan Canyon Conservation Area to get there.

e. Sloan Canyon Conservation Area

Sloan Canyon has been called the Sistine Chapel of Native American rock art due to its size + significance. The centerpiece is the Sloan Canyon Petroglyph Site, one of the most significant cultural resources in Southern Nevada. They have trails for biking, hiking as well as horse trails so if this appeals to you it may be a great stop for you.

So there you have it! Just a short list of what there is to see + do in + around Las Vegas. You can see there is more to Vegas than meets the eye. Even if you are not interested in the nightlife Vegas has to offer, I hope I’ve convinced you that you can still have a fantastic time here.
