Barcelona is the 2nd most populous municipality in Spain, known for its amazing history, architecture, food and culture. What a truly spectacular city this is and one of my favorites in the world. Here are my recommendations for the Top 6 Must-do’s:

Six :: Barceloneta Beach and Platja de Barcelona

According to TripAdvisor Barceloneta Beach is the best city beach in Europe.

Where in the World isLouise? Barcelona :: Barceloneta Beach

I took the following video at Platja de Barceloneta, a wonderful open square surrounded by restaurants and bars on one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other.

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Platja de Barcelona

Although you can expect it to be pretty crowded with tourists year round you can see it is a really delightful area to hang out. Whether you’re there to sunbathe, swim, dine, drink, people-watch or just stroll around here you will find the perfect atmosphere.

Tips:
1. Be aware that you will be approached by vendors trying to sell you everything from a circular towel to massages. Sometimes it can be annoying but you might actually enjoy some of their wares.
2. August is the most crowded month so if you’re not into waiting in lines you might want to choose another time to visit.

Five :: Try the food

Of course you know I’m going to talk about the local food. Food in Barcelona is all about making the most of the best local produce and boasts some of the best gourmet delicacies in Spain. I’m just going to touch on a couple of options here. In another post you can read more details :: Beginner’s Guide to Eating in Barcelona.

Tapas

Known for its Tapas (small plates) bars, Barcelona does not fall short of variety and flavor and quality.

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Tapas

This is actually my favorite way to eat: small plates of a variety of flavors and textures. I prefer this type of dining over a big piece of meat with a big helping of potatoes and vegetables.

Paella

Another recommendation I have for you is the paella (rice and seafood cooked and served in a large flat shallow pan). Paella originated in Valencia and you can therefore find the best of the best in that beautiful coastal town but with a little research you should be able to find quality paella in Barcelona as well.

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Paella

There is much too much to cover when it comes to the food in Spain so I’ve gone into more depth in my post Beginner’s Guide to Eating in Barcelona.

Tip: Do your research to find places that serve authentic cuisine rather than the cheap and tasteless tourist versions. Once you taste the real thing you won’t want to settle for less.

Four :: La Rambla

[AKA Las Ramblas. Originally a series of 5 smaller “ramblas” have been incorporated into one big La Rambla]

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: La Rambla

La Rambla is the most famous promenade in Spain, a beautifully tree-lined pedestrian street 3/4 of a mile long, stretching from the Christopher Columbus Monument on the south end to Placa de Catalunya on the north end. La Rambla is filled with restaurants and shops and souvenir shops and street performers, etc. This very popular Catalonian landmark is visited by tourists from all over the world all year long. Once you experience it you’ll understand why.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="1200" src="https://i0.wp.com/whereintheworldislouise.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Christopher-Columbus-Monument-Barcelona-Spain-e1546549231447.jpg?resize=900%2C1200&ssl=1" alt="Where in the World is Louise?
<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1170" height="731" src="https://i0.wp.com/whereintheworldislouise.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Placa-de-Catalunya.jpg?resize=1170%2C731&ssl=1" alt="Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Placa de Catalunya

Mercat de Sant Josep La Boqueria

My hotel in Barcelona was located less than a block off the center of La Rambla, not far from probably one of the reasons why (you might have guessed) I love finding local markets everywhere I go: Mercat de Sant Josep La Boqueria.

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Mercat de Sant Josep La Boqueria

Font de Canaletes

On the north end of La Rambla and the heart of Barcelona by Placa de Catalunya you will find Font de Canaletes, a popular meeting point.

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Font de Canaletes

Font de Canaletes’ legend is this: “If you drink water from the Font de Canaletes you will always be in love with Barcelona. And however far away you go you will always return.” I can attest to that! I DO love Barcelona and I DO plan to return, so in my eyes this saying is not just a legend.

Tips for La Rambla:
1. Barcelona is known as the Pickpocket Capital of the World. Be very aware of your belongings when walking the streets, especially in the crowded tourist attractions and late at night. Your pockets are not safe. I would recommend you wear a money belt or a jacket or vest with inside pockets in which to keep your money, phone, etc. I’ll tell you what happened to Roydio in my next post: Don’t Do’s in Barcelona
2. There is no way to avoid crowds altogether in Barcelona but August is their busiest month. Just a heads up.

Three :: Camp Nou

My Roydio is a futbol player and therefore a huge futbol fan [not to be confused with American football: in the US futbol is known as soccer]. And because of him I’ve become a fan as well. Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Europe, in fact the third largest in the world in capacity – just over 121,000 and home to FC Barcelona whose captain is Lionel Messi who happens to be my fave player. So my visit to Camp Nou was compulsory. And it certainly did not disappoint.

**CHEESE WARNING** The following video is a little cheesy I admit, but Roydio was over-the-top excited about visiting this iconic stadium and couldn’t help himself from getting in front of the camera (not that he’s shy by any means). So I decided to include it here for you. You’re welcome.

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Camp Nou

Here is a panoramic shot for you as well.

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Camp Nou

For those who are fans (or not), Camp Nou is about as impressive as it gets. 25EU will get you in the door without paying for a tour. We went on a self-guided tour of the museum, the changing rooms, the press room and commentary boxes. We experienced the audiovisual and multimedia installations, sat in the VIP area, then down in the stands.

We were not allowed to go onto the field which was a disappointment but it was well worth seeing this massive stadium in all its glory. The next time we watch an FC Barcelona game we will feel as though we’re right there!

Tip for Camp Nou: Go during futbol season so you can catch a live game!

Two :: Montjuic

Montjuic “Jewish Mountain” is Barcelona’s biggest hill. On the side of the hill is the Montjuic Cemetery which you can’t help but notice as you drive into Barcelona from the airport. It is quite a beautiful sight.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1170" height="758" src="https://i0.wp.com/whereintheworldislouise.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Montjuic-Cemetery-Barcelona-e1547713255816.jpg?resize=1170%2C758&ssl=1" alt="Where in the World is Louise?
Castell Montjuic itself is not near as impressive as other castles we have visited but what makes it so special is the view from the top.

From the castle I took a zoomed in shot of La Sagrada Familia that shows how big this cathedral is compared to the houses around it. So IMHO it was totally worth paying the reasonable entrance fee of 5EU.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1170" height="878" src="https://i0.wp.com/whereintheworldislouise.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Montjuic-Park-city-view-1-e1546558987934.jpg?resize=1170%2C878&ssl=1" alt="Where in the World is Louise?
Montjuic itself is a huge 57 acre park that sprawls over the entire hill and includes several parks within itself. Entrance is free, making this the best deal in Barcelona IMO.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="1200" src="https://i0.wp.com/whereintheworldislouise.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Montjuic-Park-Barcelona-e1546559788368.jpg?resize=900%2C1200&ssl=1" alt="Where in the World is Louise?
I took the local bus to Montjuic and took the cable car up. I then walked around the parks and fountains and took the local bus back into town.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1170" height="878" src="https://i0.wp.com/whereintheworldislouise.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Montjuic-Park-cable-car-e1546559895984.jpg?resize=1170%2C878&ssl=1" alt="Where in the World is Louise?
Don’t do what I did. Since the distances between the attractions on Montjuic are spaced fairly far apart I missed seeing several of them because of how long it took me to walk everywhere, although I saw more of the details by walking which was very cool.

Having said that, I would still recommend taking the Hop On Hop Off bus.

Tips for Montjuic:
1. Start at the top and work your way down.
2. Set aside an entire day if you want to see it in its entirety
3. Take the HOHO bus and get off at the different attractions in order to see it all because there is a LOT to see
4. Visit the castle on Sunday after 3pm to get in for free

One :: Works of Gaudi

Barcelona is home to the works of world-renown genius architect Antoni Gaudi, the world’s best practitioner of Catalan Modernism. Here are 4 UNESCO World Heritage Sites of his you shouldn’t miss when visiting Barcelona:

1. Casa Mila

La Pedrera “stone quarry” as it is popularly known. One of Antonio Gaudi’s main residential buildings, his last and a total work of art. The next time I’m in Barcelona I’d like to go back and take the full tour so I can see its rooftop terrace.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="1200" src="https://i0.wp.com/whereintheworldislouise.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/La-Pedrera-Barcelona-e1546554099499.jpg?resize=900%2C1200&ssl=1" alt="Where in the World is Louise?
2. Casa Batllo

Antoni Gaudi was commissioned by its owner to restore this old house originally built in the 1800’s and to make it stand out. One of Gaudi’s most spectacular works.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="1200" src="https://i0.wp.com/whereintheworldislouise.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Casa-Batllo-Barcelona-1-e1546554025763.jpg?resize=900%2C1200&ssl=1" alt="Where in the World is Louise?
3. Parc Guell

Located on Carmel Hills, Parc Guell is now a garden complex comprised of a series of Antoni Gaudi’s houses (including his own). It was originally designed as a housing development project that ultimately failed. The city took it over and made it public in1926. Parc Guell has been one of the city’s most important acquisitions since.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="960" height="643" src="https://i0.wp.com/whereintheworldislouise.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Parc-Guell-Barcelona.jpg?resize=960%2C643&ssl=1" alt="Where in the World is Louise?
4. Basilica de La Sagrada Familia

Maybe not many people realize this but Antoni Gaudi was not the original architect on this project but took it over after one year of construction and completely changed its original design. This is considered the most famous of Gaudi’s works. La Sagrada Familia has been in construction since 1882 with its completion not to be expected until 2030.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="998" height="1200" src="https://i0.wp.com/whereintheworldislouise.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/La-Sagrada-Familia-Barcelona-e1546554181221.jpg?resize=998%2C1200&ssl=1" alt="Where in the World is Louise?
Other tips for Barcelona:
1. Put that gratuity away. Tips are almost unheard of among the locals in Spain. If you feel your server has gone above and beyond in your eyes in an elegant restaurant, a 5-10% tip is more than enough. If your server is waiting for a tip, you’re probably in the wrong restaurant.
2. With the exception of the touristy areas and a few grocery stores, Spain closes many of its shops on Sundays. Restaurants are usually open only in the mornings on Sundays but closed in the evenings.

Ok, I don’t consider myself an expert on Catalonian food, but having visited Barcelona twice now I’ve been exposed to what is good. In a nutshell, everything is amazing! And I’m not kidding.

It’s difficult to go wrong when it comes to food in Barcelona. They know how to spice things up + how to cool it down again. But I know what I like so here are my recommendations for your first time in Barcelona:

Step #1: Mercat de Sant Josep La Boqueria

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Mercat de Sant Josep La Boqueria

La Boqueria on La Rambla is one of the main reasons I began hunting down local markets around the world. Professed by many to be the best market in the world La Boqueria offers a wide assortment of the finest food products available. You really should not miss visiting this place. It will put you in the mood to explore Barcelona even further.

Over 200 local gastronomical traders make their home here + the counter-height restaurant bars are the popular way to eat. Filled with amazing local foods, the sounds of clanking pots, pans + utensils, the smells of fresh produce + herbs + sizzling ovens are exhilarating to my senses.

Some of the most delicious local foods can be found at La Boqueria which would make a great picnic to be taken to one of the many parks or even the beach in Barcelona. Consider the following: Jamon Iberico – the best ham in Spain, fuet – dry pork sausage, Garrotxa – semi-aged goat cheese, roasted red peppers, grilled artichokes, canned razor clams or white anchovies in vinegar + fresh baked bread. OMG. I can almost smell it as I’m writing it! This is definitely on my to-do list when I return.

From produce to desserts you can find it all at La Boqueria.

Step #2: Tapas

Barcelona :: Tapas

Spain is known for its tapas (small plates) + served everywhere in Barcelona (including La Boqueria). As I mentioned before eating tapas-style is how I now enjoy eating my meals + Barcelona is the reason. What’s great is that you don’t weigh yourself down with heavy foods like steak or potatoes. Small plates allow you to savor many different textures + flavors without stuffing yourself. I’m so glad I discovered it + trust you will love it too!

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Croquettas

I got lucky at a couple of places near to where I was staying off La Rambla but I honestly don’t remember the names of the places I literally “ducked” into. Try El Quim or Bar Pinto in La Boqueria. Both have great ratings. Or you can try Rossini at Plaza Real 13.

Click here to make a reservation.

Tip: Be sure to research where to partake in tapas in Barcelona at the risk of wasting your money on unauthentic versions. Finding restaurants that serve great tapas is worth the time + effort you put into it, I promise.

But let’s get down to it – these are some of my favorites:

La Bombas

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: La Bomba with white garlic allioli + red spicy sauce

In the 1920s + during a murky + rather violent political time in Barcelona, a bar owner created what is now the signature tapas dish of Barcelona, la bomba, the bomb. Her genius was to shape the croquette + plate it to resemble the weapon of the day. It’s basically a tennis ball-sized potato croquette served with two different sauces: a white garlic allioli that represents the string fuse that the anarchists would light before launching their grenades + a rich, spicy red sauce that represents the bombs’ explosive qualities.

This is seriously yummy + you should not leave Barcelona before having one.

Patatas bravas

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Patatas Bravas

Patatas bravas is a dish consisting of fried potatoes topped with a spicy ‘bravas’ sauce made of olive oil, red pepper, paprika, chili + vinegar (among other variants), they also often come with allioli (Catalan variant of aioli: olive oil + garlic mayonnaise) to cut the heat.

No, these are not just steak fries. Trust me, they’re ridiculously delicious!

Empanadas

Where in the World is Louise?
The picture above shows a different kind of empanada – usually they are a closed pastry (savory meat turnovers – baked or fried) but I like how in these you can actually see what they’ve filled the empanadas with.

Although this tasty turnover is not necessarily born in Spain it is popular in Latin countries around the world. In Barcelona they serve several different versions. I am a fan nonetheless.

Crushed cold tomato, olive oil + usually garlic + salt on fresh bread. This is Barcelona’s famous “bread with tomato” (literal translation). Simplicity at its finest.

This tomato + olive oil-rubbed bread is an essential dish that can be enjoyed as an accompaniment with every meal from breakfast to lunch + dinner. Some places even serve the ingredients separately so you can make it yourself. I would recommend you try it. It may not sound like much but it will surely be a surprise to your palate.

Bunuelos de Bacalao

Where in the World is Louise?
In Spain, there are hundreds of cod recipes dating from the Middle Ages with a multitude of regional variations, the most notable + sophisticated ones coming from Basque country + Catalonia.

Bacalao (fried salt-cod fritters) is a product that you will see everywhere in Barcelona. Coating the fish in salt was a way of preserving it in years passed. And although this method of conservation is no longer necessary it has become a staple in Catalonian cuisine because it adds so much flavor in the process!

Since this is such a traditional food in Barcelona I recommend you try it at least once. The taste may surprise you. It isn’t salty like you might think because they soak it before they prepare it for frying.

Pintxos (skewered tapas) or Basque-style tapas are very popular in Barcelona with dozens of pintxo bars around different neighborhoods. The word pintxo refers to the skewer that holds the tapa together. There are many different types of pintxos but most come atop a small slice of bread. Pintxo bars are a fun way of enjoying tapas in Barcelona.

So I mentioned the Jamon Iberico (specially cured Spanish ham) as being the best ham in Spain as their signature culinary triumph. Apparently it is the finest in the world! Let me tell you that it is truly delicious + worth trying when in Barcelona. They take their ham very seriously here!

Where in the World is Louise?
Jamón ibérico de bellota is specially cured ham from black pigs which roam free among the holm oak trees in western Spain in search of the acorns that give marbled magenta Ibérico ham its distinctive nutty flavour.

Jamon is not your average ham + you will not think of it the same ever again. Is it worth the price you’ll have to pay? $70-80 per pound for this delicacy. But when you consider it’s been aged to perfection over a two-year time frame + always free-range + organic, perhaps you’ll have to try it + see for yourself.

Jamon Iberico at Piripipao

Patatas Bravas Piripipao

La Bomba at Piripipao

Piripipao did not disappoint + definitely think it’s worth trying if you’re going to be near the airport. Also surprised that it was so reasonably priced! Here is the Yelp recommendation that brought us here: https://www.yelp.com/biz/piripipao-barcelona-2

Variety is always my preference + IMHO Barcelona offers some of the best in the world. After enjoying tapas in Spain you may decide that this is the way you’d rather eat your meals from now on… like I have.

Step #3: Paella

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Paella

Today in every corner of Spain paella is reserved for important celebrations + family occasions.

Although the best paella in the world can be found in Valencia where it originated there are still pretty excellent versions to be found in Barcelona.

We didn’t really do our research but decided on a whim to try one of the restaurants on La Rambla. They were advertising Paella for Two + it looked pretty good on someone else’s table so we decided to try it. Definitely not what we’d read about regarding the food on La Rambla. Most say not to even bother because it’s tasteless + overpriced. Well, it was delicious (we’ve eaten it in Valencia so we know) + it wasn’t overpriced. We found it way on the south end of La Rambla + I think we really got lucky…

Having said that, don’t take your chances. I recommend you try one of these two places that have a great reputation for authentic paella in Barcelona near La Rambla:

Cheriff – Carrer de Ginebra, 15, Barceloneta
7 Portes – Pg. Isabel II, 14, Barceloneta

And I have a bonus recommendation for you!

Wok to Walk:

Wok to Walk ingredients

Wok to Walk menu

Wok to Walk base ingredients

So this restaurant originated in The Netherlands + is not at all exclusive to Barcelona. But we majorly enjoyed it nonetheless. It’s that Chinese in Roydio that keeps attracting us to the Asian restaurants. This one is definitely one that we would recommend whether in Barcelona or elsewhere. They have restaurants all over the world but I just had to sneak it in here because this is the place we first found in Barcelona, tried it + were pleasantly surprised.

Wok to Walk really does it right. Made to order + as delish as any Chinese food that wasn’t made in China. I think we found a gem + one I didn’t want to be remiss in sharing with you. The majority of their stores are found in Europe but they do have a couple on the East Coast, South America + Australia.

Your meal will be made to order in 4 easy steps:
Choose your:
1. Base (noodles, rice, etc)
2. Meat and/or vegetable/s
3. Sauce
4. Topping/s

They have a wonderful variety of ingredients to choose from + your choices are cooked to perfection in a wok before your eyes. It’s a great concept + exceptional food.

Check it out if you’d like more info on Wok to Walk

Their tag line is “Flaming Good!” + I can certainly confirm that it is! In Barcelona you can find them in the center of La Rambla.

La Boqueria, Tapas + Paella are the three recommendations I have for you on your first trip to Barcelona. If you don’t try anything else, make sure at least these three are on your list. This gives you plenty to choose from. And if you’re into Asian food, definitely try Wok to Walk. It’s bomb!

Click here for more information + to make reservations in Barcelona.

Barcelona has what I consider to have one of the best choices of traditional + modern food choices in Europe. Nothing you order ever has any lack of flavor + most every dish has a history about as interesting as the taste.

I hope when you visit Barcelona you’ll take my suggestions. And if you do, please make sure to tell me what you thought of my recommendations. Or if you have been to Barcelona, did I leave anything out that might be your favorite? I’d love to hear what you have to add, suggest… we are all in this together + I’d really love your feedback!

Barcelona is the 2nd most populous municipality in Spain, known for its amazing history, architecture, food and culture. What a truly spectacular city this is and one of my favorites in the world. Here are my recommendations for the Top 6 Must-do’s:

Six: Barceloneta Beach and Platja de Barcelona

Five: Try the food

Of course you know I’m going to talk about the local food. Food in Barcelona is all about making the most of the best local produce and boasts some of the best gourmet delicacies in Spain. I’m just going to touch on a couple of options here. In an upcoming post I’ll go into more detail in my Beginner’s Guide to Eating in Barcelona.

Tapas

Known for its Tapas (small plates) bars, Barcelona does not fall short of variety and flavor and quality.

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Tapas

This is actually my favorite way to eat: small plates of a variety of flavors and textures. I prefer this type of dining over a big piece of meat with a big helping of potatoes + vegetables.

There is much too much to cover when it comes to the food in Spain so I’ll go into more depth in my upcoming post Beginner’s Guide to Eating in Barcelona.

Tip: Do your research to find places that serve authentic cuisine rather than the cheap and tasteless tourist versions. Once you taste the real thing you won’t want to settle for less.

Four: La Rambla

Mercat de Sant Josep La Boqueria

My hotel in Barcelona was located less than a block off the center of La Rambla, not far from probably one of the reasons why (you might have guessed) I love finding local markets everywhere I go: Mercat de Sant Josep La Boqueria.

I’ll go more into details in my post Beginner’s Guide to Eating in Barcelona.

Three: Camp Nou

Here is a panoramic shot for you as well.

Where in the World is Louise? Barcelona :: Camp Nou Barcelona

Two: Montjuic

Montjuic “Jewish Mountain” is Barcelona’s biggest hill. On the side of the hill is the Montjuic Cemetery which you can’t help but notice as you drive into Barcelona from the airport. It is quite a beautiful sight.

Where in the World is Louise?
Castell Montjuic itself is not near as impressive as other castles we have visited but what makes it so special is the view from the top.

From the castle I took a zoomed in shot of La Sagrada Familia that shows how big this cathedral is compared to the houses around it. So IMHO it was totally worth paying the reasonable entrance fee of 5EU.

Montjuic itself is a huge 57 acre park that sprawls over the entire hill and includes several parks within itself. Entrance is free, making this the best deal in Barcelona IMO.

Don’t do what I did. Since the distances between the attractions on Montjuic are spaced fairly far apart I missed seeing several of them because of how long it took me to walk everywhere, although I saw more of the details by walking which was very cool.

One: Works of Gaudi

Barcelona is home to the works of world-renown genius architect Antoni Gaudi, the world’s best practitioner of Catalan Modernism. Here are 4 UNESCO World Heritage Sites of his you shouldn’t miss when visiting Barcelona:

4. Casa Mila

La Pedrera “stone quarry” as it is popularly known. One of Antonio Gaudi’s main residential buildings, his last and a total work of art. The next time I’m in Barcelona I’d like to go back and take the full tour so I can see its rooftop terrace.

Antoni Gaudi was commissioned by its owner to restore this old house originally built in the 1800’s and to make it stand out. One of Gaudi’s most spectacular works.

Maybe not many people realize this but Antoni Gaudi was not the original architect on this project but took it over after one year of construction and completely changed its original design. This is considered the most famous of Gaudi’s works. La Sagrada Familia has been in construction since 1882 with its completion not to be expected until 2030.
