On our journey through Colombia we flew from Armenia to Medellin. 

We were assured that in recent years Medellin has been transformed to a safe place to travel. Of course we are always aware of the dangers of walking the streets at night so that is something we generally avoid no matter where we go. This city was no different. But honestly we never felt unsafe anywhere we went throughout Colombia.

DO … visit La Comuna 13

On our first full day in Medellin, a city once heartbreakingly lost to violence with a most tumultuous history, notorious for the drug and gang wars that once dominated the area, we really wanted to visit La Comuna Trese (13) an over-populated and low socio-economic zone that crawls up along the west hills of the city with thousands of brick and cement homes stacked close to one another which I had read had made an amazing transformation since the days of Pablo Escobar.

I am so thrilled to have taken the time to visit because this is a city with a story of meaningful change, credited to its residents and their resiliency to reinvent itself, transforming the neighborhood which was once a pivotal center for paramilitary, guerrilla and gang activity and a location ideal for crime into a place of optimism that’s livable, vibrant and growing. La Comuna 13 is an amazing place and one I fell in love with.

Since its transformation residents are no longer afraid to leave their homes and quality of life has changed for the good. As we walked through the narrow roadways, kids were playing soccer in the streets, vendors were selling fruit and empanadas and we laughed with friendly shopkeepers who let us sample their signature green mango ice cream topped with lime and salt. It felt safe, comfortable, friendly.

The one thing that is very evident as we walk along the streets is the graffiti. This is what La Comuna 13 is known for :: artistic scenes on its walls. As I came to find out it was art that saved the city, used as a vehicle for creative and political expression. The walls became a canvas to tell its history, beautifying the area and bringing optimism and peace. And there is a story to every artist’s work. I recommend taking a tour so that you can hear the stories for yourself and experience what makes this place so special.

DON’T … believe all the hype

Nowhere in our travels to Colombia did we ever feel unsafe. Everywhere we walked we found friendly people and safe atmospheres. Please don’t believe all the hype about dangerous Colombia. Be mindful wherever you go but don’t let it stop you from enjoying your travels!

DO … go see Botero Plaza

A well-known artist born in Medellin is Fernando Botero Angulo. (As a side note, the culture of Latin Americans is to use first the father’s last name and second the mother’s last name) His signature style called Boterismo (no need to describe what it is, just take a look at my photos) makes him the most recognized artist from Latin America and self-titled “the most Colombian of Colombian artists.” In 1958 he won 1st prize at the Salon de Artistas Colombianos and has attained international recognition for his paintings, drawings and sculptures (some of his pieces have sold in the millions of dollars) with exhibitions all over the world. And in 2012 he received the International Sculpture Center’s Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award.

His donation of 23 bronze sculptures for the front of the Museum of Antioquia in Medellin became known as the Botero Plaza which is where all of my photos were taken.

DON’T … miss going to the museum

One thing I wish we would have done is to go into the Museo de Antioquia which is rated as one of the best museums in Medellin and housed in the previous Municipal Palace. It was right there under my nose and I just had a lapse in judgment. It is recommended that you start on the third floor and work your way down.

Louise didn’t go to the Museo de Antioquia. Don’t be like Louise.

DO … eat at Mercado Del Rio

As we travel around the world one of my favorite things to do is visit a mercado. Basically the word mercado means “market” but that definition has been expanded to include fine eateries, like a food court but much more elegant and trendy, and with many amazing food restaurants to choose from. Some do include the sales of produce and seafood and meat as well. While in Medellin we went to Mercado Del Rio and it was beautiful!

Here they serve everything from alcoholic beverages to appetizers to main courses and desserts… and the atmosphere is awesome! They even have large screen TV’s throughout playing the ever popular futbol (soccer). Fabulous! This mercado did not disappoint, for sure.

I would definitely recommend this mercado. But don’t let that stop you from finding others! This was our final night with family and friends – it was a great way to end our time together.

DON’T … forget to bring all your friends!

Mercado del Rio is a great place to hang out with your friends! The atmosphere really lends itself to fun in every sense of the word. Food, friends and fun all go together so have yourselves a great time!

DO … visit Marinilla

We had a wonderful tour guide to drive us out to a famous landmark in Guatape but on our way we had to stop in this yet another adorable Colombian town with yet another cute plaza.

In the municipality of Marinilla we visited the Museo del Cristo y las Cruces where you will find more than 2700 crosses of different styles, sizes, materials and countries of origin on display. The collection was donated in 2005 by Roberto Hoyos Castaño who collected the pieces for more than 35 years from his travels around the world.

DON’T … miss stopping for a cup of cafe

Marinella is a great little town to stop for … what else? COFFEE! Every city in Colombia is actually a great place because after all you are in Coffee Country! Try a cup at 9Bares Tienda de Cafe. It’s highly rated on TA!

DO … climb La Piedra del Penol

Our plans in Medellin included several adventures that we were very excited to participate in…. one of them being to climb La Piedra del Penol. This is a famous landmark also called The Rock of Guatape. At its highest point it is 7005 feet above sea level and is composed of quartz, feldspar and mica. 

At the base you will find food and market stalls. As you climb there are several “resting” points (at least that’s what I used them for HA!) and halfway up is a shrine to the Virgin Mary.

It was an extremely hot and humid day but we did it! We climbed a whopping 745 steep steps to the very top! WHEW!

When we got there there we found a three-story viewpoint tower, a souvenir shop (I bought a “rock” for my collection – how original, right?), a bar and there are lots of chairs and tables where you can enjoy a little refreshment before making your way down.

If you ever find yourself in this area of Colombia this is an absolute must do!

DON’T … miss out on the cerveza michelada con mango

It is tradition to celebrate your climb by having a cerveza michelada con mango, the local beer, which they serve with salt and lime on the rim of the glass. Although I’m not a beer drinker I did have a sip of Roydio’s to celebrate making the trek and then I ordered my fave drink in Colombia :: limonada de cocos (coconut lemonade). OMG it is FABulous! We were both pretty proud of ourselves having made it on this hot and very humid day and these cold drinks were just the ticket!

DO … visit Guatape 

We made our way to Guatape where we stopped again to enjoy another beautifully colorful town.

When you get to the city of Guatape you will find a square. Of course. Like every other town in Colombia. And oh the beautiful Colombian colors were everywhere! I loved it!

And you’ll find great views of La Piedra del Penol on the way as well!

DON’T … miss taking a boat tour!

The building of the dam (see more info below) created a truly picturesque place. We were smart and took a boat tour on the reservoir. And I must say it was a perfect day to be on the water! Don’t miss your chance to take this wonderful tour!

DO … enjoy Viejo El Penol

Since we were in the town of El Penol, or what we thought was El Penol, we had to look around and check it out…

We found out that this is just a replica of the original town which was founded on June 20, 1714 but had to be relocated in 1978 because of a flood and they had to construct a hydroelectric dam which created the Guatape reservoir as we know it today.

If you want to get a taste of how the old town of El Peñol might have been, you can stop at Viejo Peñol, featuring a reconstructed plaza and church. There are souvenir shops and a couple places to grab coffee, ice cream, or something to eat.

DON’T … forget to bring your good camera

Make sure you find your way to the outside behind the shops and you will find THE BEST views of the city! OMG you will not believe how photographic this town is! If you’re looking to take some Instagram-worthy pics, this is definitely the place to go!

DO … take Cable car up to Parque Arvi

It seems that everywhere we went in Colombia we ended up on top of a mountain. I had many opportunities to overcome my fear of heights HA! But I must say that the views are tremendous and it was worth every trek UP!

It was getting late in the day and even though it was closing soon we decided to take the cable car up to Parque Arvi which is both an ecological nature preserve and pre-Hispanic archeological site on the eastern slopes of Aburrá Valley in the northeast area of Medellín.

The cost to take the cable car from the metro to Santo Domingo was included in the metro ticket but there we paid 4600 COP ($1.50US) per person for a 10-minute ride up to the park which is a very large, 4352 acres in fact, ecological park deep in the woods on top of the eastern mountains of Medellin where you can hike all around. It was a pretty amazing ride over the tall pine and eucalyptus trees in this forest.

When we got to the park entrance we had a relaxing time exploring the beautiful surroundings. There are some displays with information about Parque Arvi there and some shops and a restaurant as well as some comfortable seating scattered all around.

We ordered some refreshments at the cafe and just enjoyed our surroundings and relaxed for a while before heading down to Santo Domingo.

I highly recommend a trip up in the cable car in Medellin to Parque Arvi. Whether or not you hike the trails in the park or not – trust me you will be rewarded with some of the best views of the city! And if you’re able, time it so that you get the sunset on your way down!

DON’T … expect for anyone to speak English

As a matter of fact, everywhere you travel in Colombia you will be hard-pressed to find English-speaking people. You will be able to find some tour guides that will speak English but not here in Parque Arvi. And as a general rule the local people do not speak English at all.

DO … stop in Santo Domingo

Since it’s on the way down from Parque Arvi Santo Domingo is a great place to stop, especially if you’re looking for some local interaction and community engagement in your travels. Once known to be one of the most violent neighborhoods in Comuna Popular it has turned over a new leaf in its progressing atmosphere and urban improvement initiatives. 

We enjoyed walking the streets of Santo Domingo. Again, we felt completely safe here. And it was really nice to see how the locals live.

DON’T … be afraid to eat on the streets

We had absolutely no worries about eating on the streets anywhere in Colombia. The food is yummy and safe to eat! Here in Santo Domingo you can eat on the streets for much cheaper than in the city. We ordered a local plato (plate) of pollo (chicken) with all the trimmings for a mere 5000 COP ($1.75 US). It was yummy and more than enough for the two of us :: we even had some leftovers to feed a local street dog.

DO … splurge at San Carbon Restaurant

Before leaving Medellin we chose on our final night to enjoy dinner at a nice restaurant located right up the street and walking distance from our hotel. Known for their steaks, the food was delicious, the atmosphere indeed was “fancy” and there was live jazz music which we also really enjoyed. It was a great way for us to end our amazing time in Medellin.

DON’T … expect to pay local prices

Prices at San Carbon are higher than the average restaurant in Medellin, or for Colombia in general, but if you’re looking to have a nice dinner this is the place to go. Excellent food and atmosphere!

Medellin was one of the biggest surprises on my travels to Colombia. Not only was I intimidated by all the hype about it not being a safe place to travel but this amazing city blew me away and made me a believer in all things good about in the world.

If there is one thing that I hope you gleaned from this post is that you can safely and happily travel to this city and have the most amazing time of your life here. I do hope you will follow my lead and come support all the wonderful things Medellin has been doing and continues doing to transform a bad story into a good one. Because that is exactly what is happening in this place. How blessed I feel for having had the opportunity to experience it.

Tip #1 :: Choosing the perfect cruise line

The first of the Cruise Tips I have for you is in choosing a cruise line. Why? Because they all differ in personality. If you stop to consider what vibe suits you best you will be guaranteed a great time because it will fit your personality.

It has to be said that all of the cruise lines try and provide something to please everyone. But trust me when I tell you :: it is possible to wind up on a cruise ship with food that you’re not happy with, entertainment that doesn’t suit you and people with whom you have nothing in common. There’s nothing worse.

And that’s why my number one cruise tip is to choose your cruise line first. And I always advised that you do your research well in advance. I’ve taken four different cruise lines over the last 30+ years and these are the ones I am sharing with you ::

Carnival 

Known as the “Fun Ships” Carnival seems to be especially focused on pleasing the party-goers, singles and families with children and they make it more affordable so the cost fits into the budget of this demographic. And with the fun also comes a lot of noise. Yes, Carnival ships can get loud. But if you’re all about the fun, that will be perfect for you. They provide a party atmosphere out by the pool all day and night.

Carnival sails to :: Alaska, Australia, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, Panama Canal, Transatlantic and Transpacific.

Carnival’s main dining room food quality is fine and it is all included in the price of your cruise so if you don’t like something you can always ask for something else. It’s a lot of fun when you go with a large group to dine together every night. And if you are traveling as a couple you can eat at your own table or ask to be seated with a larger group for dinner. It’s a great way to meet new people. But just remember you will be dining with these same people every night.

There are lots of other food venues on board that are included in the price of your cruise as well such as the ever popular Guy Fieri’s Burger Joint, 24-hour pizza on the Lido deck and many others. When we traveled with our family we spent a lot of time on the Lido deck because who doesn’t like fresh, homemade pizza? They provide lots of choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Royal Caribbean

The cost of an RCCL cruise won’t break your bank depending, of course, on what type of cabin you choose and if you opt out of the specialty dining venues they offer. Their large ships never seem crowded no matter where you go even though their largest ship accommodates 6600 passengers and 3000 crew members.

RCCL sails to :: Alaska, Arabian Gulf, Asia, Australia, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada/NE, Caribbean, Europe, Pacific Northwest, Panama, South Pacific, Transatlantic and Transpacific.

The entertainment on board is fabulous – their broadway productions are magnificent. The main dining room food quality is good. Their specialty dining restaurants are great.

Celebrity

Celebrity sails to :: Alaska, Asia, Australia/NZ, Bermuda, Canada, Caribbean, Dubai, Europe, Galapagos, Hawaii, Pacific Coast, Panama Canal, South America, Transatlantic and Transpacific.

With moderate cruise pricing they also offer good main dining room food quality. I would rate them a notch above Royal Caribbean for their food. And their itineraries are pretty spectacular.

They have a tendency to cater to the the older British crowd out of the UK (we left out of Southampton) where the entertainment is also focused on the Brits. That’s what we discovered at least. But it’s party time almost anywhere else.

We took Celebrity Equinox out of Istanbul when they still included that port. Since the US Embassy bombing in Ankara in 2003 cruise lines have removed Turkey from their itinerary altogether. But this was truly the best cruise I’ve ever taken. Istanbul to Barcelona and 12 stops in between. I would do it again in a heartbeat. And Celebrity was the perfect cruise line for it.

Norwegian

Norwegian sails to :: Africa, Alaska, Asia, Austrialia/NZ, Bahamas, Canada/NE, Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, Pacific Coast, Panama, South America and Transatlantic.

The Norwegian cabins have a tendency to be a bit smaller than the average cruise ship but you won’t be able to tell. We couldn’t. Their main dining room food quality is better than average as is their on board entertainment. They have really stepped up their game when it comes to on board entertainment. Their ship Norwegian Bliss even has a race track!

I loved cruising with Norwegian – we’ve taken the Escape and the Epic and they were both fabulous!

So there you have the run down on four of the top cruise lines IMHO and the ones I personally have experience with. I have enjoyed each one and they each have their strengths so it just depends on what you are looking for in a cruise. But wait, I have more cruise tips for you ::

Tip #2 :: Choosing the perfect ship

Choosing a ship is my next priority and one of the most important of my cruise tips for you. It’s probably because I’ve had so many to compare that I am more persnickety about the ship I want to take on my next cruise. Once you’ve sailed a few times you realize what you like and what you don’t like so my opinions come from my experience ::

SIZE / AGE

I have found that the size and age of the ship is the number one priority for me. Yes, destinations are important too but if the itinerary is great and the ship is old and doesn’t have all the amenities I like having then it makes for a dull time while at sea. The newer ships tend to be not only larger but also have better amenities onboard to make the cruise much more fun.

The smaller ships can get to places the larger ships can’t such as rivers and canals. But they are also not as stable as the larger ships so you will feel the movement of the waves a lot more. And I find that they also target an older crowd with less amenities than do the larger ships.

CLASS

The class of the ship also determines how much will be available to you while you are onboard. The higher the class the more expensive but also the more comfortable and luxurious your experience will be. Many times the class will also determine the ship’s age.

AMENITIES

Amenities are important if you are going to spend any time at sea at all. For instance, depending on the destination, on a 7-day cruise you could be spending half of the time at sea. And if your options only include a crowded pool outside or crowded restaurants inside you may not enjoy your cruise as much as a larger ship. Consider how much you would be willing to spend to upgrade your class of ship so that amenities are plenty.

Tip #3 :: Choosing the perfect itinerary

It almost isn’t as important to me to choose the specific itinerary because once you decide what kind of cruise you want there are so many different ports you have to choose from each hold something special and many different options. I’ve been to the same ports two or more times and I always find new places to explore so consider this as another one of my important cruise tips ::

DESTINATIONS

Whether you want to spend your port time in the water or on a beach or taking land excursions, choosing your destination is very important. Take time to explore all the different options, there are many!

TIME OF YEAR

Just as above and of course very important when considering a cruise, you will want to keep the time of year in mind. Before June and after September you can expect cooler weather and even some rain and the ocean water tends to be colder in places like Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. I don’t think a little rain is always a bad thing, especially in places like Pompeii or Athens where the heat can be overwhelming. But just consider that when choosing the time of year for your cruise.

PORTS

Consider the location you will be sailing out of. West Coast, East Coast or even a destination port. Because that can be really fun!

LENGTH OF CRUISE

Cruise length ranges anywhere from 3 days to 21 days on a regular cruise itinerary so one of my tips is to consider length. It all depends on where you want to go and what your budget is. Personally I have taken so many cruises that a 3-day cruise seems just too short. Sometimes even 7 days isn’t long enough for me anymore. My personal preference is a 14-day cruise or longer. And I love Europe and the Mediterranean so that time frame is perfect for those destinations.

Also consider how much time you prefer to be at sea as opposed to stopping at ports. There are lots of activities on board a larger ship in case you are spending several days at sea. But if you’re an adventurer you may opt for a cruise that includes several ports. There is no wrong or right. The choice is yours. But one of my tips for choosing a cruise is to consider how much time you want to be at sea.

EXCURSIONS

You can choose and reserve your cruise excursions when you are onboard your ship but one of my tips would be not to waste your precious vacation time doing this. There are always very long lines for Guest Services because other people haven’t planned ahead and booked online. I suggest you do all of your research prior to your cruise and book your excursions well ahead of time. You will have more choice before they are sold out and you can enjoy your cruise time doing fun things on board.

Another one of my tips is to spend time doing some research and trying to find reputable cruise excursions by companies who are not necessarily affiliated with your cruise line. Chances are your excursion will be cheaper and many times you can find a better choice for you and your friends/family. Make sure you do careful research on the company offering excursions. Although there are many reputable ones, there are also some that are not. Cruisecritic.com is a valuable forum resource where you can get others’ recommendations of excursions you are thinking of booking. My personal preference is finding local companies to those offered by the cruise line. It is their business to show you a great time and get you back to the ship in plenty of time. We have experienced some fantastic excursions by researching those with rave reviews and high ratings found on cruisecritic.com and tripadvisor.com.

Tip #4 :: Choosing the perfect cabin

When it comes to a cabin it really is a personal preference. When I cruise I like my cabin to feel like I’m at home so another one of my tips is to consider what kind of cabin you’d like. I prefer a higher middle deck and I prefer a balcony because of the views and the fresh sea air. But if you’re not picky and you want to keep your budget to a minimum you may opt for an inside cabin. Again, the choice is yours ::

LOCATION

The location of your cabin may be important to you if you have a tendency to have motion sickness. Low and middle is my recommendation if the “sway” of the ship will hinder your ability to have a good time and/or sleep.

If motion sickness is not a problem, consider the area of the ship you will be spending a lot of your time. Go online and check out the map of your ship. If you like to go to the pool, try and get a room nearer to that side of the ship so it will be easy and less time-consuming getting to and from your room. If you want a great view of the sunrise, sunset or land check out the route of the ship to see what side of the ship will give you the best views.

TYPE

There are several choices of cabins available depending on your budget and your preferences. Inside cabins are the cheapest rooms available but you will not have a view and they have a tendency to feel smaller and closed in without windows. The cabin choices go up from there all the way to outside and balconies and suites. Think about what’s important to you when traveling and make sure to choose something that will be comfortable for you. This is definitely one of my best cruise tips. Don’t just go for cheap :: the difference is only dollars so be sure you get what you will be comfortable in.

CLASS

There are also different classes of cabins, some that come with concierge and/or butler service. If that is important to you make sure to look into how much extra it will cost and if it makes sense for your budget.

Tip #5 :: Choosing the perfect embarkation location

I really enjoy taking my time and arriving at my cruise port at least a day early. Sometimes I even arrive 3-5 days early especially if it’s a location I’ve never been to before. And there’s also the option of lengthening your vacation by staying longer. One thing I’d love to do is take back-to-back cruises but I have yet to experience that so I can’t give you input on that. So here is what I recommend ::

CITY

When choosing a cruise take into consideration where you will be embarking. The port city may be near other things you are interesting in doing or seeing. Some cruises will embark in one city and disembark in another city. That might be an option. But be sure you check to see which itineraries offer what you prefer.

PROXIMITY

How far is your cruise port from where you live? Take into consideration the cost for your flights and/or other transportation you will need to pay for before even getting onto your cruise ship. And if you are driving make sure you check out where is the best place to park your car for the time you’re gone. They do have parking at the port but from what I hear it is much more expensive than the off-site parking lots, some of which provide shuttles to the port.

Tip #6 :: Planning fun before and after

Once you have chosen your cruise line, destination, ship, destination, cabin and embarkation point you can start researching and planning your time before and after your cruise. This is one of my favorite cruise tips! Take your time :: it’s your vacation so make it last as long as you can!

LODGING

It is good to stay in lodging that is in close proximity to the port, dining options and with other interesting places within a short drive or walking distance to enjoy. Whether you choose a hotel, resort or AirBnb is up to you. Many hotels offer shuttle service to the port or you can take an Uber if they don’t. If you’re near by it won’t cost much.

OUTINGS

Try to find some great things to do that are not far from your hotel. Having a pool at the hotel is always a great way to start relaxing. I chose an Escape Room for us to experience prior to our cruise out of Miami. It was a lot of fun. We also ate at some great restaurants nearby that feature Latin food to get us in the vacation mood.

When we traveled to Istanbul to start on our 14-day Eastern Mediterranean cruise we arrived 4 days early to explore Istanbul itself. And when we disembarked in Barcelona we spent several days there as well. It is so much fun to take advantage of the cities in which you’ve never been before. I mean, who knows if you’ll ever have the chance to return? May as well take advantage of being there if you have the time, right?

I hope some of my cruising tips will give you food for thought as you begin planning! I’m so excited for you because whether this is your first time or you’re a veteran cruiser, I know you will have an absolutely fabulous time!

Arming yourself with the right apps + technology before you travel is essential if you want to have a smooth vacation + save money at the same time. Not only will it help you plan + organize your trip :: it will help assure your trip will be a success. Simply stated, you can’t afford to travel without these important apps.

It’s a big world + with the right apps, it just got much easier to navigate.

SoS by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line ship has 2,752 staterooms, including 188 suites and 28 more balconies than the next largest ship in the fleet :: Harmony of the Seas. It can accommodate 6,680 passengers in 2,750 cabins which are available in different configurations. The passengers are served by 2,200 international crew members.

One of the reasons I wanted to write about SoS is to show some of you especially who are not necessarily interested in going on a cruise that there is nothing to be hesitant about. IMHO cruising is one of the best ways of taking a vacation. It’s all inclusive of room and board but best of all :: you get to travel from one location to the other without having to pack up your bags and get yourself to the next one.

I’ll try to cover lots of aspects of the ship for you so you can really get a feel of what the SoS is all about.

Symphony of the Seas :: The Balcony Stateroom

With state-of-the-art amenities in my balcony stateroom you really can make this your home away from home. The bathroom is the most important thing to me and this one is pretty perfect as bathrooms on a cruise ship goes. I mean, I’m sure it may be more spacious in suite but I’m not one for splurging on space when I won’t be in it but for an hour a day. Lots of storage, comfortable mattress and pillows, a large workspace, a couch and a spacious balcony.

I always choose a balcony stateroom for several reasons :: 

1. Looking out onto the water rather than a wall gives it the appearance of having more room
2. You can have your breakfast outside in the morning
3. You can see the view as you’re coming into ports or leaving the port :: sometimes there are views of other lands as you’re sailing from one port to another
4. You can wake up to the most beautiful sunrises and get ready for dinner to amazing sunsets. Depending on what side of the ship you’re on and what direction you’re sailing at that time of the day, sometimes you get both!
5. Sometimes it’s nice to have some downtime in private. Laying out on the balcony is much nicer than just being in a closed-in room
6. I love the smell of the sea air so I can leave the sliding glass door open while I’m resting or doing some work onboard or even when sailing at night. Speaking of work, I can also do that on the balcony if I choose to

To settle in to my stateroom I unzip my packing cubes and put them in the drawers, put my toiletries in the bathroom, hang up my clothes, set up my computer and slide my empty suitcase under the bed. Voila! I’m home for the next 7-14 days or longer…

Symphony of the Seas :: The Solarium

The Solarium is a great place to get a little peace and quiet away from all the crazy fun at the bars and the pool. It has a couple of private hot tubs and lots of space. Here you will find some comfortable seating including lounge chairs and cabanas. There are plenty of spaces for everyone. And it never seems to feel crowded.

Symphony of the Seas :: The Slides

There are several slides onboard the SoS that provide great water fun outdoors for kids and adults alike. Not only are there water slides but there is a dry slide that breaks all records.

This heart-pumping adventure on board beginning on the top deck :: 150 feet above sea level :: on a see-through glass platform is called the Ultimate Abyss and it’s not for the faint of heart. So as not to spoil the ride for you I’ve just included the exit… wait for it! HA!

Symphony of the Seas :: The Pools

There are four pools throughout the ship. They even have one for Adults Only. The jacuzzis are also scattered throughout in different sizes and shapes and locations. It’s always a good time for the jacuzzi!

Symphony of the Seas :: The Cabins with Interior Views

I’ve always opted for a balcony stateroom on the outside of the ship because of the reasons I stated above. But they also offer inward-facing balcony staterooms that are really popular. You can step out on your balcony and be instantly a part of all the activities happening below.

There is also one very special family two-story inward-facing suite available for those who are traveling with the family. Albeit unaffordable for most, Room 1733 goes for $20,000 and has all the amenities you could ask for and more. A slide takes the kiddos from the top floor to the bottom. Two full bedrooms with big-screen TVs, games, etc. You’ve got to see it to believe it. To see a video of the interior click here.

Symphony of the Seas :: The Shows

In my opinion Royal Caribbean has one of the best line ups of Broadway-quality shows on the high seas. Royal Caribbean Productions is the first team to consult with an astronaut that lived in space for a live theatrical production called “Flight :: Dare to Dream” in which the high-impact choreography and production also take form in 3D flying.

Offering three other shows, Hairspray (Broadway), 1977 (ice rink) and Hiro (aquatic), each performing on different nights, you have ample time to see them all. I recommend making reservations before you sail to assure a seat. If you are an RCCL Gold member or above you qualify for priority seating.

Symphony of the Seas :: The Dining Venues

SoS has ten complimentary dining options which includes the main dining rooms plus, of course, there is always room service. They also offer ten specialty restaurants for an additional charge if you choose to dine in a more upscale atmosphere. And they also have a full-service Starbucks store located in the Royal Promenade.

As far as signature restaurants go they include Hooked Seafood, Chops Grille, Izumi Hibachi and Sushi, Jame’s Italian, Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine, 150 Central Park and Park Café and many more.

You will find just about everything on the menus you could possibly think of and then maybe few more than you hadn’t thought of. The images below are just from the main dining room. The specialty restaurants are over the top.

Among the many amenities of Symphony of the Seas are some more somewhat discrete features that are sometimes just taken for granted or overlooked. I mean, you’re on a ship so you expect it to function right and meet your needs and requirements for a good time. Well, the bars probably aren’t overlooked but since I don’t personally drink I overlook them all the time and so I’ve put them in this category. LOL!

The Elevators

I know, you’re probably thinking that elevators really don’t deserve a heading of their own. Well on SoS they are all pretty spectacular and I decided to feature them anyway. No minute is had on board that doesn’t entertain in some way.

There is even a traveling piano man who moves about the ship up and down the elevators to entertain you. Now, aren’t you glad I included elevators in its own category?

The Views

Whether leaving a port, coming into a port or sailing in the middle of the ocean there are amazing views to be had. You can see it all if you’re standing on any of the decks or from your stateroom if you have a balcony. All I know is that the views are intoxicating.

The Bars

Enjoy 42 bars and lounges where you can imbibe to your heart’s content serving everything from cocktails to specialty coffee drinks.

Among the many state-of-the-art features, the Rising Tide bar travels up and down between three floors :: what a ride!

I guess it isn’t such a stretch to self-tending-bartenders. Yes, robots. The Bionic Bar can serve up to 1,000 drinks per day with 21 mixers and 30 spirits from 2 robot bartenders.

But to see them working up close and personal is a trip (HA! I’m a 70’s girl). It is fascinating to see them pull liquor out of the ceiling, pour the exact measurements into glasses, get ice out of the freezer and even pick up and shake the drinks. It is truly hypnotizing to watch. See for yourself ::

The Royal Promenade

The Promenade is just one of seven neighborhoods onboard SoS. Boardwalk, Central Park, Entertainment Place, Pool and Sports Zone, Youth Zone and the Vitality Spa and Fitness Center are the others.

The Art

Feast your eyes on the beautiful artwork throughout. RCCL has left absolutely no stone unturned on this amazing ship.

They even have interactive art! OMG I never even knew something like that existed!

The Outdoor Fun

Outdoor entertainment facilities include pools and whirlpools, an ice-skating rink, a mini-golf course, a nine-deck-high zip line, two rock-climbing walls, a running track, full-size basketball court and tennis court.

The ship offers one of the tallest slides at sea as well as two FlowRider surf simulators, a Splashaway Bay water park for kids and toddlers and other waterslides.

Next time I’m on this ship I’ll be trying the zip line. Doesn’t it look fun?

You’ve got this in the bag

:: Carry on suitcase

My favorite carry on suitcase is the Delsey hard case spinner which has four wheels which makes for easy steering + relieving the weight off your arm, includes an outside pocket which is perfect for a computer, tablet, paperwork, etc. + can expand up to 2″ larger. All zippers lock together so that they don’t risk getting broken off when traveling. It is the perfect carry on for a one- or two-week trip. OK two weeks takes some real expertise but I know you can do it!

:: Packing Cubes

With the eBags ultimate packing cubes or eBags 6pc packing cubes I can stay completely organized. When I get to my destination I just unzip my packing cubes + lay them in a drawer. No unpacking necessary. These packing cubes have been a game changer in my travels. Another one of My Favorite Travel Products!

Splish splash

:: Waterproof bags

When going to the tropics or a beach there are a few things that I always make sure to bring. To keep my belongings dry while on the water I always bring my Weeds waterproof dry bag + GRP waterproof phone pouches which come in a 2-pack so I use one for my phone + the other for my passport, etc.

:: Water shoes

I also always bring my Bare Run water shoes because the ocean isn’t always sandy. I can walk around on the sand + in the ocean in comfort + without risking cutting my foot on a rock or something. I love my water shoes!

:: Snorkel mask

I love snorkeling but I never did get used to the traditional mask + snorkel so I was always discouraged to go. I would constantly get water in my mask + in my snorkel + it would just freak me out. But with my Seaview 180 full-face snorkel mask I have enjoyed snorkeling more than ever! I’m so glad I tried it :: I can breathe normally through my nose + mouth. And if I go down below the snorkel has a valve that closes up so I don’t swallow any water. Game changer for me for sure. Yet another one of My Favorite Travel Products!

Back on your feet

:: Crocs

One thing I wear on my feet almost on the daily in the tropics or at the beach is one of my favorite travel products :: Crocs Capri V flip flops. They serve me well as sandals as well as walking shoes, that’s how comfortable they are. I’ve been wearing mine for four years + they haven’t worn out a bit. I may have to get a pair in another color because they certainly don’t need replacing.

“Connecting” the dots

:: Travel adaptor

For international connections I recommend the Limechoes adaptor. This incredible adaptor works well in all countries + even includes a couple of USB ports for your electronic devices.

:: Power strip

And in order to stay connected it’s always a smart idea to bring a power strip + my favorite is the travel-sized Belkin with a surge protector. One adaptor + my power strip + I can charge all of my devices in one fell swoop [if you’re not familiar with that phrase it comes from Shakespeare meaning “all at once” But you probably figured that out…]

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

:: Travel flat iron

Over the years my hair has become so unruly :: it’s probably the grey coming in 🙁 . So because of that I’ll never leave home without my Lunata travel-sized flat iron. I use it to tame my mane + can also be used to touch up some wrinkles in my clothes. It’s so small + takes up hardly any room in my bag so I make my flat iron a priority.

:: Hair oil

And when I’m out + about in the water I also need my Living proof no frizz nourishing oil. If I’m not in in my room or don’t have time to use my flat iron I can feel confident this oil will tame my frizzies while I’m out. I spray some into my palm, rub my hands together + run them through my hair. Ahhhhhh… I don’t have to be Monica! [If you don’t know what I’m talking about watch “The One in Barbados.” Make sure to watch to at least the 4:00 minute mark :: you’ll thank me! HA!]

:: Your beautiful face

A product I’ve been using for several years is great to take on your travels :: Boots 7 Serum + Day + Night Creams [voted #1 by Good Housekeeping] that come in a great set so all you have to do is put them in plastic travel-sized containers if you want to take them in your carry on + so they fit in your 3-1-1 TSA approved bag + you’re ready to get gorgeous + go!

:: Dental care

The Quip battery-operated toothbrush is fairly new + makes it so when I travel I don’t have to plug in my bulky electric toothbrush like I do at home. Quip is compact, the perfect size for traveling + it comes with its own cover. It has a timer so you know how long to brush. When you subscribe they will send you a new battery pack + brush head for $5 every 3 months [free shipping]. And they’ll send you the first set FREE! And it’s so cute, don’t you think! I love it!

And I know it seems like it would be easy enough to just buy toothpaste at my destination but I am one of those people who will only use my favorite brand [a full tube won’t fit in my 3-1-1 bag]. So the Toothpaste2Go travel-size toothpaste refiller allows me to prepare it before I travel + I don’t have to bring a full tube of my favorite paste.

Oh Em Gee! My Favorite Travel Product ever :: Carry on bag is the Rajin by Laga. It fits perfectly under the seat in front of me. And it is so beautiful I get compliments on it everywhere I go. There are lots of different colors to choose from. Read the story about the company that makes these. I think you may just be compelled to buy one + support this amazing cause.

:: Accessories bag

Another product by Laga is the Tari bag which works great to hold all your charging cords. I am sure there are any number of things that can be stored in this beautiful bag + sometimes I travel with several. It also comes in a mini. Oooh + a little cross body bag perfect for traveling… oh gosh, there are so many styles to choose from it may be difficult to choose. Sorry!

You wear it well

:: Pants

To ensure a comfortable flight these lightweight cargo pants will do the trick. Made by SCOTTeVEST these pants have several pockets + are so lightweight + comfortable :: this is an incredible find.

:: Tops

I layer my tops starting with a comfortable camisole, t-shirt + lightweight cardigan. I also love the Janska Annie’s Wrap [I’m so sad they went out of business :: there are just a few left] that serves as an easy to put on + take off cover/blanket which also has two convenient pockets. I can see myself in my seat, feeling so warm + cozy. Just thinking about it makes me motivated to go!

:: Outerwear

And again by the same maker as the cargo pants my travel vest by SCOTTeVEST is seriously one of my favorite travel products in the category :: garments. If you prefer having sleeves the travel jacket by SCOTTeVEST is another great option. Either way these garments include 16 + 23 pockets, respectively, + will hold everything you could possibly need at a moment’s notice as you’re traveling.

:: Foot/leg wear

On a long flight it is imperative to wear compression socks. It can’t be explained how much more comfortable your flight will be. Dr. Scholl’s wool sneakers are amazingly comfortable + make you feel as though you are walking on air :: in the AIR. HA! They really are perfect for traveling. Another suggestion that will add to your comfort :: bring a foldable pair of ballet slippers that you can slip into during those long flights. Hey, it’s a way better option than walking into the bathroom in your bare feet or in socks! Eeeew! Trust me!

You may as well just sleep on it

:: A few comfort aids

Here are some of my favorite travel products that will ensure a comfortable rest or sleep :: footrest by Starkio [being able to put your feet up will make a huge difference in your flying experience], Daydreamer inflatable travel pillow, Hearos Xtreme ear plugs + ergonomic sleep mask. Those all go without explanation. Getting some sleep isn’t always possible on a plane but these products will give you the best chance of catching those much-needed zzzz.

Refresh yourself

:: Freshen your breath

Especially after a long flight it’s always nice to freshen up a bit. I love Colgate Wisps for my teeth. They are so convenient. I also bring some fresh mints to freshen my breath + Bert’s Bees honey throat lozenges to help with dry throat.

:: Wonders for your face and hair

For my eyes I use Refresh eyedrops + for my face it’s Dr. Jart deep hydration dermask + Mychelle tinted moisturizer. Those are great to freshen up + make you feel human again right before you land. And for my hair I bring my very favorite foldable wet hair brush with mirror. It’s not only good for easy brushing wet hair but it detangles better than any other brush I’ve ever used. At home I use the full-sized version.

:: Don’t neglect your body

I was recommended to amazing cream by my SIL who ranted + raved about it one day. And I completely agree with her. Medix retinol cream for my arms, hands, legs + feet are the best especially after that dry airplane air. I squeeze some into some travel-sized containers (again) to be sure it will fit in my 3-1-1 bag. As a matter of fact I use them for other makeup products as well.

:: Hydration and Nutrition

Not all airlines serve food + snacks + certainly not free of charge anymore + if they do it’s not always nutritious. So I’m always prepared with some dried fruit + nuts / trail mix + maybe some granola bars. And if you pack the Nomader collapsible water bottle can be filled after passing TSA + keep you hydrated at all times during your travels.

:: Keep germs at bay

Not just one of my favorite travel products but one of the most important things I bring on every trip is a box of EmergenC to stave off any germs flying all around me. And speaking of germs why not include an All-Day sanitizer pen as well? Better safe than sorry!

We live in a digital world

:: Electronics

When I’m awake I am always compelled to do some work on my Macbook Air or watch a pre-downloaded movie from Amazon Prime. The Active noise cancelling headphones are pretty affordable as headphones go. My iPhone X is always with me for anything from calendar reminders to alarms to flight information [+ to always being able to tell the correct time!] so I make sure to always have on hand my Jackery portable charger + at least one of my iPhone charger cables.

:: If I don’t have a video of it, did it really happen??

To record all of my activities on land + in the sea I never leave home without my GoPro Hero5 Black. I know there is a new one out but I still love mine. And Oh My Goodness what great underwater snorkeling shots I’ve gotten on my GoPro! I can actually leave it on for hours as I’m traveling + it will record everything I’m doing. I love it! Be sure to get the battery charger + extra batteries. You do not want to run out of juice at the most spectacular place in the world you’ve ever been to! One of my favorite travel products of all time.

You won’t have to take off your shoes or jacket or belt, you’ll be able to leave your computer inside your bag + you won’t have to take out your 3-1-1 liquids bag.

Best Travel Tips :: Booking your travel

International travel should be booked at least 5-6 months in advance to get the best price + the best flight options. Wouldn’t you rather fly non-stop than have a layover somewhere for who knows how long?

Domestic travel should be booked at least 2-3 weeks in advance to get the cheapest flights + the best flight options.

Book at 5am if you can. In other words :: as early in the day as possible. Avoid booking between 8pm-11pm. Again, to get the best price + best options.

Research has shown that you get a better deal if you book on Tuesdays for domestic flights.

And for international flights, book on Wednesdays.

I also recommend you schedule your flights to depart early in the day. In case of delays or cancellations there will be plenty of alternate flight times. If you schedule departure for later in the day you risk having no alternate flights + having to stay overnight. Lesson I learned so you don’t have to. You’re welcome!

If you’re traveling in a pair my recommendation is to book aisle + window seats. Chances are no one will book the middle seat + you’ll have the row to yourselves. If someone does take the middle seat you can either ask them to trade so you can sit next to your partner or just stay where you are. If there is one tip that I can give you to make you rest easier whenever you travel it’s this: Get the travel insurance.

Travel insurance will cover you in the event you have to cancel your trip, your flight is canceled, there is bad weather or damage at your destination, you get sick or injured, you lose your passport, you need medical attention at your destination, your bags are lost or delayed… need I say more? Get the travel insurance.

Best Travel Tips :: Planning your trip

If you’re planning a cruise you might find this helpful.

Make a list of every place you want to see. And remember to plan on plenty of down time. After all, you want to enjoy your vacation not rush from place to place.

Do your research + plan so you can make the most of your trip. Find out when things are open + closed. Find out how heavy your luggage can be for your destination. Check the weather. You get it.

Best Travel Tips :: Before you pack

Sephora + many other beauty stores give out free samples + they work really well for travel-sized beauty products. Also remember to save all of your hotel samples because they are a great size to use for the 3-1-1 TSA liquids carryon rule. Shampoo, conditioner, lotion :: save away!

Prepare a packing list of everything you will need. This will help you bring only what you need + not overpack.

Place all of your jewelry in pill containers. They are the perfect size for earrings, necklaces, rings + everything is in one container.

Use sunglass cases to pack cables/cords/earbuds.

Place a little piece of plastic wrap between bottles + their tops. Air pressure has a way of building up + can cause spillage of your liquids + this is a great little tip to avoid that.

Rather than bring a big tube, Toothpaste to GO makes a great toothpaste refilling kit so that you can take just enough for your trip that will also go in your 3-1-1 bag.

One thing I always pack is a travel-sized power strip. Whether traveling within the US or abroad, a power strip (with surge protector) saves you the headache of finding outlets for all your devices + you’ll only need one. And pack it on the perimeter of your suitcase (just like your belts). It will take up no room at all!

For international travel you will need only one international converter plug + voila! Charge all your devices in one place.

Best Travel Tips :: Packing your suitcase

When it comes to packing my number one rule is: Roll Your Clothes. You will have more room + it will be easier to find what you need.

Speaking of easy, you will want to invest in packing cubes because they are travel game changers. There are many to choose from but I recommend these two: packing cubes + ultimate packing cubes. I NEVER travel without my packing cubes. Never rummage through your suitcase in search of that one item you need :: never unpack again, just unzip + put it in a drawer. Game. Changer.

Consider layering your clothes when traveling to colder climates. Rather than bringing a lot of outerwear, layering will take up less room in your luggage + you can remove layers when it gets warmer.

Use a coordinating color scheme for your clothes so that you can mix + match. This helps to avoid bringing too much + having to drag around a big suitcase full of things you may not even need or use. When is the last time you traveled that you didn’t say to yourself, “I didn’t need half of what I packed!” Think it through…

I recommend packing your pillow case. Not only will it make you feel more like you’re sleeping in your own bed but afterwards you can use it to keep your dirty clothes separate from your clean clothes.

Pack your heavier items near wheels to avoid smashing + wrinkling everything.

Place a couple of dryer sheets between your clothes to keep everything smelling clean + fresh.

Once you’re done packing place a big label on your suitcase that says FRAGILE. Airlines have a tendency to heed caution + place them on top of other bags + often times “fragile” bags come out first on the conveyor belt.

Or better yet, travel with a carryon-sized suitcase only. Whether your trip is short or long a carryon will suffice nicely. If it’s a longer trip, plan on doing a little laundry. It’s a game changer if you can manage it. And you will see how little you really need while traveling. This carryon is my very favorite!

Best Travel Tips :: Packing your hand carryon bag

The best hand carryon bag I have + been using for years is the Rajin “diligent” by LAGA. Fits nicely under the airplane seat in front of you + easily accessible during your flight. Lightweight + although it looks delicate it is very resilient + water/stain resistant. But the best part :: you will get complimented on it everywhere you go!

Things you may consider keeping in your hand carry on bag are:

Pen :: you will need one handy to fill out travel forms

Portable charger :: in case the plane doesn’t have one or it doesn’t work

Charging cables :: for in the plane or at the airport :: Apple Certified or Android. I always recommend getting them in different lengths

Noise-cancelling headphones or ear buds :: airlines don’t always provide them for free

Colgate Wisps :: convenient way to stay fresh while traveling

Frozen sponge in a plastic baggie :: to keep snacks cold

Footrest for your plane ride. I got my daughter one for her travels + she loves it! You may want to try this

Best Travel Tips :: What to wear while traveling

One of my favorite travel garments is my SCOTTeVEST (as seen in the picture above). It has 16 pockets + is perfect for traveling. Lightweight + easy to slip on + off :: it’s my go-to garment for traveling all over the world. They also make a jacket with all those pockets if that works better for you. Either way you will be so glad you made this travel investment!

Especially on a long flight it is imperative to be comfortable. Make sure to wear comfortable pants that give like leggings or a cotton blend that won’t wrinkle or create static cling. Wear slip on shoes that are not too snug.

It can get chilly on the plane so I always bring a large wrap or scarf. This one is very versatile + convenient. Slip it on + off easily. And it even has pockets!

This is also a good time to layer your clothes. If it gets too warm just take something off.

Compression socks are a great investment for travel. They will keep your feet + legs from swelling on those long flights. Get up + walk around. That will also help.

Best Travel Tips :: Before you leave the house

Call your credit card companies + let them know you will be traveling out of your home state. This is huge. Nothing is more inconvenient or embarrassing than when your credit card is declined because they think it’s being compromised.

Charge your devices the night before.

Pre-download movies or your favorite series. Amazon Prime Video lets you do this for free with membership :: just download their app to your device :: as well as does Netflix with their subscription.

Email yourself a photo of your passport :: in case of loss or theft. This is one thing you do not want to be without when traveling internationally.

Download your airline’s app :: it will come in very handy should there be any changes in your flight time or gate number.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport. For international flights add at least 2 additional hours to the time it normally takes to get from your home to the airport. That will give you ample time in case there is unusually heavy traffic + long check-in + baggage lines at the airport (actually, another reason to travel with a carryon only + avoid that line).

Best Travel Tip :: At the airport

Check the monitors. Don’t just rely on the ticketing agent to give you the correct information. Gate changes happen all the time. One of the best travel tips.

One trick I’ve learned after traveling for many years is to be prepared to give up your seat when they ask for volunteers. If you are flexible with your travel time + arrive at your gate early you will be among the first to hear the announcement. They can put you on the next available flight, give you a voucher for free future travel (I’ve gotten as much as $800) + they sometimes even give you free meals + lodging (if you have to stay overnight). I’ve done it many times + it is totally worth the delay in getting to your destination. As long as you allow for the extra time, that is.

Best Travel Tips :: At your destination

Use ATMs to get local currency for best exchange rate.

Use your flat iron to touch up wrinkled clothes. This cordless travel-sized one is perfect + takes up hardly any room at all.

The local Hop On Hop Off bus is a great way to get around for one price in many cities around the world.

Find wifi passwords to public places by checking the FourSquare app on your phone.

Go with the flow. Of course you want to see what’s on your list but allow yourself the freedom to get off track sometimes.

Get off the beaten path. Talk to the locals. Find those wonderful little places you won’t find in the guide books + where tourists don’t usually go. My favorite of my best travel tips.

Learn a few words in the language of the country you’re going to. It will make a huge difference in your interactions with the local people.

If you have a choice of taking the train or renting a car, rent the car. Don’t worry about getting lost :: sometimes you find the best places that way. Just allow yourself time to explore.

Document your trip. Whether it be a journal or photographs or both. At the end of every day write down everything you did. That way you won’t forget the amazing sites you saw + everything you want to remember about them.

Additional Tip :: After returning home

Refill all your travel toiletries.

Keep travel-only items packed away in your suitcase bringing you one step ahead of the packing game for your next trip.

Save a copy of your general packing list inside your suitcase.

One thing I always do is spend the first few days at home going over the trip (besides doing laundry of course) + documenting every detail of what I did. I’ll match up all of my stories to the pictures I took. And then I order a photo book from PastBook.

It’s a great way to keep all of those amazing memories at hand + PastBook does an amazing job at putting together a quality product.

This list should give you a little more confidence on your next trip. When you prepare ahead of time travel becomes less stressful + a whole lot more fun. When you do your research you will know what to expect + won’t be unpleasantly surprised. And it will ultimately lead to a most enjoyable journey.

Having gone on at least two dozen cruises I’ve learned a few tips that will make your traveling so much more enjoyable. A little planning ahead will help you confidently venture out into this big beautiful world! How to pack a carryon for a cruise will make your life so much easier!

I’ve included links for some of the suggested products because they are what I use + they are all tried + true. Hopefully those links are helpful to you when choosing the best for yourself.

Before I start, I have to warn you that you may roll your eyes a couple of times in the beginning. I know what you’ll be thinking: this girl is Type-A. Ok, you’ve got me there. But if you look beyond that you will see that there is a method to my madness + it will keep you from going mad as well! Hey, you may even learn a few things about yourself in the process…

1 :: Start with a spreadsheet (or a list)

OK, I saw you roll your eyes already! It does sound a little daunting doesn’t it? I mean, who makes a spreadsheet to go on vacation? Well, I’ve found this to be the most efficient way to assure myself that I’m not forgetting anything + that I will pack only what I absolutely need and in a carryon at that. Say what you will, it works for me + I know it will work for you if you just give it a chance.

I’m actually gonna make it super easy on you by including my spreadsheet here for you. Feel free to print it out. This way you can follow along without too much pain.

OK, if a spreadsheet isn’t going to work for you just make yourself a LIST. Get out a piece of paper + start writing.

List your days on the sides + the times of day at the top like I’ve done, breaking out each portion of the day (Morning, Afternoon, Evening). Now fill out all the boxes with your cruise itinerary.

You will see this list is designed for a woman. Yes it is, because it’s MY list. HA! For a man this list is very easily converted.

2 :: Catalog what you will need

Decide on items of clothing + footwear you will need for each portion of the day. Count them up + list them on the right side as I have done. And do follow my suggestions because you won’t need more than that especially if you plan to pack only in a carryon because it can be done if you just follow my lead.

Make your list + grab your items. Double check to make sure you have everything. But when you’re finished… Don’t Add to it. Trust me, this is a huge step in getting you organized + taking only what you need. It will help keep you from overpacking. And remember, you’ll be schlepping your suitcase behind you. Save your back!

3 :: Mix and match your clothing

Lay everything out on your bed + start planning your outfits. Plan to wear shorts, skirts + shoes at least 2 times each. Refer to my Spreadsheet. Choose a neutral color palate so that all items coordinate with each other. Patterned items don’t mix + match well so try to choose solid-colored shorts + skirts so that they will all work with the patterned tops you may want to bring. Keep your colors neutral + that will help everything to match.

Another thing to think about is wrinkles. Try to pack as many wrinkle-free items as you can in that carryon. Staterooms do not allow for irons so your only recourse will be to steam your clothes in the shower. You’re going on this cruise to have a great time, not to worry about wrinkles!

Tip: If you do have a few wrinkles that simply don’t go away by hanging up your clothes, use your flat iron to do some touch ups! Works great!

4 :: Take into account formal dinner nights

If you can work in separates rather than dresses they will serve you really well. You can always accessorize to glam up your outfit. If you really need a dress go ahead + bring one but make it black. Accessories can change your look so you can wear it more than once.

And it can get chilly onboard so don’t forget a light sweater or at the very wear sleeves.

5 :: Wear your heaviest clothing while traveling

I just couldn’t help using this picture. We all know The One Where No One’s Ready, right? LOL! Well, I just read somewhere that a man was arrested for wearing all of his clothing on a plane to avoid paying to check his bag. LOL! Ok, that’s not what I’m saying here.

If you wear your jacket, sweater + walking shoes while traveling you won’t have to pack them! Makes sense, right? The airlines let you carry on your outerwear + don’t count it as hand luggage so you can always carry it over your arm if you prefer not to wear it.

When I travel I love wearing my SCOTTeVEST specially designed with lots of inside pockets. This one is so lightweight that I don’t even realize I have it on + all the pockets come in really handy for anything you might need at a moment’s notice. It may even eliminate the need for a purse altogether. They also make a SCOTTeVEST jacket with the same type of interior pockets design. One of my most favorite travel hacks of all time.

When going through TSA just take off your jacket + lay it on the conveyor belt. You won’t have to even think about what’s in your pockets + setting off that embarrassing alarm.

6 :: Leave your jeans at home

Jeans are too heavy to wear in the sun and there’s no room to pack them in a carryon anyway. Think about taking lightweight items made of linen or cotton (blended with microfiber, polyester or lycra that prevent wrinkles). They will take up less room in your luggage + will work much better for you in the tropics.

7 :: Pair your beauty products down to a minimum

You’re only gonna be gone for a week, girl! One of the biggest problems for us women is not to bring too many beauty products. Take only what you need! I have a couple of rules for myself in order to pack light and use only a carryon, especially when it comes to going to the tropics:

1. Bring a good leave-in hair product that covers all your bases :: natural is key here. It will make your travel experience so much simpler. And you won’t have to bring any other products. Think of wearing your hair in a pony tail or bun sometimes. And wear a hat. You’re in the tropics, girl!
2. Put whatever you absolutely need into small (this is my fave set) travel-size containers [contact lens cases work well for foundation, etc.] because all liquids must fit into no more than a 1-qt size ziplock. Click here for TSA’s 3-1-1 rule on liquids.

Because I travel so much, I keep one set of toiletries + beauty products in my my toiletry bag ready at a moment’s notice. All I have to do is grab it + put it into my carryon + I’m ready to go. When I get home from a trip I refill everything + have it ready for the next trip.

8 :: Everything should fit

I recommend getting a four-wheel, hard case carryon. Having a hard case really helps keep all of your belongings safe + secure PLUS it is much easier to pack.

It has 4 wheels so it is very easy to maneuver through the airport. Now that you know what carryon I use, I have three very important tricks to make sure everything you need for this trip will fit every time:

First Trick: Roll your clothes! By rolling your clothes you will find packing so much easier. Separate your delicates, tops + bottoms into piles. Then get to rolling. Pack a carryon.

Second Trick: Invest in some packing cubes! Have I not shared them with you yet? OMG using my eBags Ultralight Travel Packing Cubes are game changers. They keep you organized + cut your packing/unpacking time in half. They come in a variety of colors + sizes. There are lots of different brands to choose from but my very fave is the eBags packing cubes.

The eBags set includes two small, two large + one slim cube. I find that this set is perfect for me. Stack them on top of each other to perfectly fit the dimensions inside your carryon.

Place your delicates in the slim cube, tops + shoes (HACK: put shower caps) in the large cube, bottoms + sandals (HACK: put in shower caps) in the other large. Use the two small to fit your non-liquid toiletries. This is what I do but feel free to arrange them however works best for you. I cannot even tell you how packing cubes have changed my life on the road. Seriously, check them out + tell me if they aren’t the absolute best travel hack ever!

Third Trick: There are 3 easy steps to this third trick.
1. First, before you start packing, unzip the expansion zipper + expand your bag to its largest capacity.
2. Secondly, fill it up + zip it up.
3. And for the last step, squeeze down on your bag while zipping up the expansion.
Voila! It works like a charm every time!

Remember I said packing cubes would cut your unpacking time in half? When you go to unpack just unzip your cubes + lay them inside your cabin drawers. No need to take anything out! Your clothes stay right inside your packing cubes + exactly where you put them. And when you’re ready to pack up you know exactly where everything goes back!

9 :: Bring a large hand-carry bag aboard your flight

I would suggest you bring a tote big enough to hold:
1. a change of clothes + underwear [you never know]
2. electronics/books [to keep you entertained while you wait]
3. your purse [I suggest a very small cross body purse for only your money, ID, tickets, phone + passport. This happens to be my very favorite cross body by Laga]
4. your 3-1-1 rule ziplock bag for TSA [click here for more deetz]
5. anything else you might need on your flight [portable charger, earbuds, snacks, a pair of socks]
If you don’t have room for #4 in your tote, I suggest you put it in the exterior compartment of that great carryon in case TSA wants to see it.

This is my very favorite hand-carry bag by Laga. The proceeds go to providing employment + education for tsunami survivors in Indonesia. What a great cause, right? It fits right under the seat in front of me on my flight + I get compliments on it everywhere I go! I take it with me on every trip! And you can pack a lot in this carryon bag.

And if you have room, put your swimsuit + coverup + sandals in there. That way, while you’re waiting for them to deliver your bag to your stateroom, you’ll have everything you need to go down to the pool + start enjoying the sun!

Speaking of sandals, I found a pair of flip flops that are so comfortable I can walk in all them day. They form fit my feet + I feel like I’m walking on a cloud. Seriously. So, unless I’ll be in cold weather where it is imperative I wear closed-toed shoes, I bring these flip flops with me everywhere I travel. Great footwear find!

10 :: Leave the kitchen sink at home

Think about what the ship provides: hairdryer, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, towels :: you don’t need to bring these items. All they will do is take away valuable real estate in your carryon. Don’t second-guess what else you’ll need because you’ve already worked that out. If it’s not on your spreadsheet you can live without it for a week!

I hope this list will help you travel lighter + more efficiently. By adopting these easy rules your cruise will be so much less of a headache I promise you. I’ve stayed true to each + every step above + cruising has been so much more about the fun and way easier because I can pack really light using only a carryon bag. Easy Peasy!
